Matching a sub to single driver speakers

I wanted to follow up with this thread and ask if I do decide to use 1 (or 2) subs that are actively crossed at say... 80-100 Hz, is there really any benefit to going with any other design than a small monitor for my full range drivers?

I'm pretty new here, but it seems that the larger/more complex cabinets are designed to extract lower base from a full range driver; if bass is removed from the equation is there still a reason for some of the more complex designs (other than I think they look cool!)?

Yes, the extra response overlap increases the 'sub' system's tuning flexibility required to get a good blend between both the mains and room modes/gain curve. If your mains are already -6 dB/80 Hz, then ideally the 'sub' needs to be within a 1/4 WL (~43"/80 Hz) on center 'as the Crow flies', so for one 'sub' in most rooms this means it needs to be centrally located between the mains. At minimum then, one/channel is required and even then you're still not able to address the room's floor/ceiling modes unless you use a third 'sub' as Dr. Geddes recommends.

From this we see that as the XO point goes lower, more tuning flexibility is realized, especially since our hearing acuity rapidly drops off down below the human speech BW and the 'subs' can be up to a WL or more away from the mains and why cinema and THX HT system's mains are ~ -10 dB/30 Hz.

Alright, I'm back with another question. I've been wanting a new preamp (one with a remote control because yes... I am that lazy!) and I've been wanting a slick way to mate my full range Omega's (or whatever I decide to build as my next DIY project) with some subs. Have I found the perfect piece?

Emotiva Audio USP-1 Stereo Preamplifier

I'd appreciate it if some of those that are wiser than I (which should be most everyone here) wouldn't mind taking a look at the link posted there and running over the specs. I'm thinking the "2.1 Bass Management System" they talk about would offer a lot of flexibility when it comes to matching subs to fullrange speakers.

To top it all off, because in addition to being lazy I'm also cheap 🙂 , I'm fairly confident I couldn't build anything with anywhere near the functionality of this unit for anywhere near the price.

Thoughts?
