Markaudio CHR-70.3

Hello all,

i have a pair of Mark Audio CHR70.3 i want to build some boxes.
i will use them mainly with 12" sub, in this condition i don't want to build a Frugel, i see more something sized like a bookshelf. In this idea the important is to have a box wich the best high/medium results.
i have read many things on the forum, there is many plans... this driver is existing from a long time and many boxes have been build
with time and experience that you have what box sounds the best do you think?

thanks in advance

You're never going to get any consensus on 'best' as it depends very much on your goals, how large / complex an enclosure you want. Other than the precise points at which step loss & edge diffraction will occur, the enclosure itself has no real effect on the midrange & higher frequency range, other than providing a solid mounting point to the drive unit; back-loads of any kind (vented, horn, TL, sealed or whatever) with very few exceptions are only functional in the low frequencies. Since you stress that aspect though, logically something like one of Dave's tapered mar-Ken enclosures with the heavily chamfered front baffles should suit, since they tend to minimise the (usually modest) diffraction signature.

i have everto build boxes and i have the habbit to work with wood if the design is not simple it's not a problem
if we admit these box could be used alone and i want something more like a bookshelf not like a frughel. what model impress you the much?
i have check on the forum what plans are you speaking Dave's MAR-KEN for CHR70 ?

Look into xrk971's threads.
He has/had several Foam core speaker enclosures. I've even built a couple.. experimentally.. as place holders..
They work 'surprisingly' well with a sub.
As in; years later I feel no desire to upgrade the simple stoopid foam core boxes.
With a sub you don't need more.. as the main bass boost benefits of some 'intricately' designed speaker box is largely superceded by a decently setup Sub.
All fanboy bleats on boxes and digressions into the 'correct' box materials.. notwithstanding.
Spend a couple hours experimentally ? fooling with foam board and a hot glue gun..
Then report back ?

I quite liked Dave’s Mini-Onken series of enclosures for the MA drivers. Maybe take a look at the several iterations at http://frugal-phile.com/boxlib/P10free/CGR-dCHR-Ken-301113.pdf
Fairly straightforward builds that work quite well, and if you’re able to execute proper bass management -i.e HP them anywhere in the 80-100Hz range - think you’ll find it worth the effort.
I’ve just inherited a pair of the sealed mMars with earlier CHR70 to experiment with as rear surrounds in 7.2.4 Atmos configuration that is certainly modest by most standards.

Note, in my active building days, I never tried the foam board, but stuck exclusively to Baltic Birch plywood.
