Good day/night to you all! I've been thinking of building a pair of CHN-50 enclosures to use for my desktop setup, now that I'm hooked on MarkAudio from my 7MS build.
After looking through all the vented and mass loaded and horn designs, I simply don't know the advantages and disadvantages to each within the context of my particular setup...
Being that they will be on a desk, they will be both near the rear wall of my room, and each speaker will be sharing "baffle" with part of the computer monitor to the left and right.
Quite a loaded question, but what would be the sonic advantages in this use case to going with a horn loaded design, versus simple vented or mass loaded, other than taking advantage of getting the drivers higher and closer to ear-height when sitting on the desk?
Does it even matter? If not, might as well go with a Tozzi One kit? That'll save me time and effort.
I appreciate your insights. 🙂

Horns are projectors, so ideally need 'X' distance for them to 'gel', so best for relatively long listening distances.
BR Vs MLTL is size, differing vent loading with the latter producing a bit 'tighter'/higher SQ plus spaces the driver up to ear/whatever height sounds best overall.
TL Vs tapered TL [TQWT] is varying degrees of tuning to get the optimum damping based on driver specs, or viewed another way; any taper with work with any driver specs with the degree of damping determining its performance, i.e. may not be remotely optimum, but is better than nothing, so at this point, might as well build as big [or small] a BR with a baffle thickness vent and stuff the box/vent to 'taste' [AKA ~aperiodic]. 😉
edit: Had to go look up the kit.........based on being near a wall plus using the monitor to add some baffle loading and get the driver closer to ear height, would personally make a MLTL to suit, so not necessarily any of the current designs [no clue what's available].

CHN-50 pretty much drops into A5.2/3 designs.
Mine are in uMar-KenPlus for the A5.2/3. Small, bass goes as low as it goes. Bloudhound (Baby Lab*) is a bit bigger a bit more extended on the bottom.
If you want more bass you need a bigger box. An ML-TL like Girrafe* or Frugel-Horn Lite**.
*On the new Woden Free Plans page: Woden Design | Free Plans (not everything is there yet).
** The Frugel-Horn
Giraffe could be folded to fit on a desk, or like someone did with Frugel-Horn Mk3, stuck the top up thru his desk.

>"Being that they will be on a desk" is you situational limitation. Transmission lines are longish things relative to desk height-to-ear; you'd have to really want a TL over a BR to wedge one in there. Maybe they are a little bit better.
As Dave said you can fold it, which basically means put a right angle in the pipe length somewhere, so that the desk height is right, at the expense of now having a need for some distance to the back wall for the rest of it. An L shape...imagine 12" up off the desk surface; another 16 to the back wall - maybe you dont have that kind of room back there?
If you really wanted to fool with it, you could get some 4" PVC pipe and a few right angle connectors and do something like 10" up, 6" back, 6" across, and 6" back toward the front with a cap at the end, perhaps with a short port in the across piece tube. But it sounds like you just want to execute on a proven desktop design and be done.

Dear drummerdrewski,
I think it would be wise to eliminate the Tozzi One as an option.
The sound quality of the Tozzi One is no good, so a regular bass reflex is the way to go.

I may be in the minority here, but I like the Tozzi for my desktop. They do lack bass extension, but with a small sub they do quite nicely. The size and shape fits perfectly although a stand is all but required. Sure, they may not be ideal for sql, but they still sound nice enough to have sold me on Markaudio and because they're connected to my pc, I run them with dsp anyway.
However, your review on the 7ms pushed me over the edge to get a pair of those. They're in smallish bass reflexes in my den. Nothing compares to the 7ms. Mind blowing. They simply disappear into the room.

Mind elaborating?
As always you guys come in with great knowledge! Thank you. What is it you dislike about the Tozzi Ones? I've seen on another forum as well that some of the DIY guys dislike those enclosures. Would you mind telling what it is you don't like about them?

Hey man, I'm glad to have helped with your decision making. 🙂 I still love my 7MSes also, I'll be throwing those bad boys in a dedicated listening room in a few months!
Dear drummerdrewski ,
Compared to the bass reflex box (HB-08F) I use, the Tozzi One is inferior in the following.
・ Insufficient bass volume
・ No sense of dynamism (many sound absorbing materials?)
・ Poor localization (large baffle?)
・ Specific range is peaky (square style?)
・ High price

I don’t know about the price, MA seems to be giving Tozzi enclosures away.
The box is poorly executed, injection moded plastic (nothing wrong with plastic), and is not that good a box. The same concept executed much better would be fine.

Thank you all for your responses, it's clear that going the self-built box is obviously the way to go.
Dave, if you do indeed have those Tozzi One enclosures you'd be willing to part with, I'll send you an email because I'd be happy to take them off your hands and then I can do a back to back comparison of the Tozzi Ones vs. one of the vented WodenPlanet10 designs and post my discoveries. 🙂
