Apparently the equal-power XO point for audio is just a touch lower around 350 Hz give or take, depending on programme material.Digging up this thread again as I'm considering a similar build. I notice the Alpair 5.3 has a power rating of 5W, and I'm wondering if that significantly changes when put into a 2-way setup crossed around 400Hz?
I'm not familiar with that term, got any reading material to help me out? Found it in Google. Half the acoustic power/energy is above that point and half is below.Apparently the equal-power XO point for audio is just a touch lower around 350 Hz give or take, depending on programme material.
Generally I'm planning on doing an active crossover build with a dsp unit for room correction on the low-end.

I suppose my next question is, if the Alpair 5.3 is crossed around 400Hz what's the enclosure requirements look like for sealed? Can I reasonably shrink the enclosure to a 0.5L space?
A slight peak could be useful for baffle step purposes. But this would have to be checked against a sim like Edge. A double peak would be bad, but if one cancels out the other...
HI Folks,
I'm planning a fast/waw bookshelf with alpair 5.3 and a tang band w5 1138smf.
It will be a 46cm tall 18cm wide and 28cm deep. Reflex port tuned to 37-38 hz. The tang band w5 is around 9.7 without the port. The alpair 5 has about 1.7 liters closed enclosure.
crossover point is around 310 Hz. I hope it will deliver the results 😀

i also wants to build a waw with alpairs 5.3 + silverflute w20 / Dayton Audio DA175 or 2x Peerless 830657...those woofers goes for aorund 40$.. and i think they can get into low 30´s .. so less than 100$ on drivers total + croosover. In a large bookshelf/standmount or compact floorstander.. for a easy setup in room/ simple one amp ( fosi audio v3 )one dac system..but with out loosing full sound.. thanks you all for share your knowledge.

Hi, Yes its considered to be finished, and the results are really good. 😀
Although Im not totally pleased with my woodwork so I think I will rebuild it on next summer with epique 5.5 woofers. (I dont have too much space)
Its my first hi-fi speaker build, and I learned a lot. Everything changes the sound very much. I tried some internal cables, and all sounded totally different. Even swapping the resistors. I ended up janzen silver cables on the mid high, and janzen superes resistors. So these sound awesome. Im using a yamaha rx-v 685 Ht amp, but by itself for music it is terrible. I have added a fosi tb10d to the front pre-out and its magic...

Thanks, the draw of the xo is up there. To match the volume of the alpair and the woofer i have raised the replaced the resistor to a 6.8 ohm 10w janzen. (The woofers are not too sensitive) The capacitors are some polyfilm ones 250v, and the coils are also janzen 1.5mh 0.6 ohm or so... At first i would check the woofers and box design for it with virtuixcad.
So at the end i can get the Alpairs 5.3 with 7w rms and used with a 30w rms amp? ...when they are used as midtweeter the drivers are not push that hard as they do not handle the low frequencies?... how much its the plan for the tysen? ThanksThe power rating (of every hifi driver) is largely irrelevant. I pay no attention.

The alpairs are fragile because they dont have support on their back, so need to be handled with care. Even easy to reach their bottoms if you let the bass on them even on medium volume, but this way as a mid-tweeter the membrane is barelly moving, although its not designed for really high volume, but sooner you will hear that its out of comfort zone by loosing details.
Im thinking of an daytona mini 8 amt tweeter as a supertweeter for my speaker. Could it be a good pair? Above 8-9 khz...
A whole lot of combing. Sometimes you can make it work, sometimes you can’t.
Quarter wavelength at 8kHz is just over a cm. That is how close you want the tweeter to the FR to avoid any combing.
