SSM2210

Saw the AD on the part and confused it with the SSM2141 balanced line driver.

The SSM2210 was a transistor pair from PMI. Analog Devices aqquired PMI awhile back and I am not up on many of the PMI part numbers. The BUF634 is actully a buffer and not really an op amp also.

Hi,

(FWIW) P.M.I. SSM-2210 (NPN) and their counterparts SSM-2220 (PNP) are both very low-noise, and well-matched, dual transistors.

Analog Devices MAT-02 (NPN) and MAT-03 (PNP) share exactly the same specs but are in a different package. i.e. To-78 metal cans for the MATs, but 8 pin DIL plastic for the SSMs. I have little doubt that they use the same die in their fabrication.

I have used all of them at one time or another in pre-amps with success, and wouldn't hesitate to recommend either, if you can get hold of them.

Regards,🙂

Hi Bobken,
The specs of MAT02 and SSM2210 are exactly the same but if you measure the Beta, the MAT02 has MUCH higher Beta and sound of the MAT02 is also better. So I doubt it is the same die.😕

I have asked AD about SSM2210 and 2220. It's the same chip, so I gathered and the demand for the DIL08 is very low therefor "it's no more". I have the datasheets of them both and also PMI (Precision Monolithic) is mentioned in the datasheet of MAT02 as an extra evidence of the origin. PMI was bought by AD.

BTW: Did I mention that I have SSM2220 and SSM2210 for sale?

Hi Elso,

Yes, I didn't pass any comment on their *relative* sonic attributes, as you saw.

However, some years ago I did substitute both (NPN&PNP) AD devices in the same circuit for the existing PMIs, and decided that they 'sounded' marginally better than the PMIs.

I didn't take any measurements, and assumed that the rather more rugged package was responsible for this difference as I had seen this sort of phenomenon before.

Do you really consider that after buying out PMI , AD would have done some more work to develop this same chip, or what, because in every other respect, as we both know, there is no difference?

Personally I cannot see them spending the necessary dollars in developing an entirely new chip, just to do the same thing except have higher beta. 🙁

MAT02 vs SSM2210

Hi Bob,
Maybe they put the low Beta in the DIL Package and the high Beta in the metalcan. But in the old days both versions excisted indepently when PMI was not yet acquired by AD.😉
Just popped up in my mind:
Mark Levinson, the company, made a big fuss about updating one of there preamps. What did they do among other things? Changed from DIL SSM2210 to Metalcan MAT02! I knew it!😀

SSM2210 was made by "Solid State Micro Technology for Music" which was bought by PMI in the late 80's.
They made really great things. Like ultra low noise opamps that could be use as stepup amp for Moving coil pickups.
or SSM2017 a lownoise (950 pV/sqrt(Hz) og 1.5dB) mic amplifier.
but all this goodies are now obsolete.

Depends on which updates you're talking about -- from the No 36, to the No 360, I haven't seen a lot of differences. I have both units, and it's been a while since I looked, but IIRC the boards were virtually identical -- layout and components. With the No 360S, they went to a 4 layer Cyanate Ester material. I haven't had the chance to inspect the guts of a 360S yet though, so I couldn't say what the electrical differences are.

Sorry, typo -- refs to 36 should be 38.
