Mark Audio Desktop TL proposals. Everything under one roof.

Ladies and Gents,

I am proposing to build a small desktop Transmition Line along the lines of the Mark Audio Alpair 5 desktop TL from Henkjan at Juiogo Audio.

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

The placement of the driver needs to be roughly (definately on the same face) as shown in the picture. This is because I am planning to put small amp (not decided on the flavour yet) and a digital radio into the box (not too sure of the workings of this yet obviously). The unit will be used horizontally.

Does anyone know of any design/plans from the current mark audio range that would lend themselves to my requirements.

I am not 100% tied to Mark audio if anyone has any other similar ideas.

I am also not 100% tied to TL if anyone could suggest a decent small horn or sealed box or whatever.

Has anyone stumbled across any 'all in one box' designs in the past?

Thanks in advance,

Paul

I would like to build speakers for my computer, so I am at the same place.

I would like to use the CHR-70, CHP-70 or CSS EL-70. My computer sits in the corner and there is an 18" to two foot deep triangular space behind it I would like to use. Ability to incorporate a T-amp board into the design would be a big plus.

Slightly off topic: Does anyone have any experience with the CHP-70. Does it have the bigger bass like the EL-70?

I would say : follow the original two-separated-boxes as usual .
They can be moved to cope with different ambient and furniture ,not to mention stereo perception and depth . A little shelf for the electronics can be done in style if wanted . A computer as a source doesn't mean that the amplifier has to be digital :not at all ! I find T-amps and similia the less diy-able amps around.
Then ,for the speakers ,a one-in-all enclosure can be a real challenge in design if the same target quality (regular stereo two boxes) is the goal .
Channel separation lends itself to a system where physical separation is important ,because since electricity is converted to sound ,each source has to be (subconsciously) perceived separated (the brain mixes ).

From putting 2 and 2 togther the CHP-70 could probably be considered a precursor to the EL70. Same basket, similar cone, less magnet. Available in Japan & Germany (and from Mark).

The folded half-tower for the CHR70 could be rejigged for the EL70. Steven S has almost finished his set.

Starts here.

Using the CHP-70 in a MAR-KEL70 or mMAR-KEL70 ?

Dave,

I'm considering a build of a MAR-KEL70 or mMAR-KEL70 enclosure.
The CHP-70 would be an easier buy here in Europe than the EL70.

As discussed in a post above, the drivers are quite similar, the biggest
construction difference seems to be the magnet.
The TS-Parameters are unfortunately a bit different too, especially the Vas.

Can the above enclosures accept the CHP-70 instead of the EL70, perhaps with minor modifications ?

Kind regards,
Yves D.

Lots of non T-line suggestions here! 😀

You could take a look at the Boominator thread, perhaps something in that direction sans battery is a nice option.

I'm (also) planning a build that can be used as pc-setup (and as portable 'radio'). I'll probably design a BR using PVC pipe as enclosure material for neodymium drivers myself (not sure which ones yet) for ultimate portability.

Ability to incorporate a T-amp board into the design would be a big plus.
you can simply add an extra compartiment to the existing design or if it's a BR simply add the volume of the extra parts internally.

Just take a look here. 😉 I do like T amps, but that's not a discussion for this thread.

I'm considering a build
Yves, later on I saw that the designs you are talking about are BR, so this perhaps not the suggestion you're looking for, but; If it's T line you want to give a (first) try (don't know your experience/demands), take a look at the Cheap Trick 193 or 194, very nice price/performance ratio and good driver availability.

If you're looking for EL70's there are several dealers in Europe that stock them. I got mine from Spectrum Audio in Germany Breitbandlautsprecher und mehr - SpectrumAudio just look under News and then click on the EL70 link in the text Neu von CSS , EL70 mit Papiermembran made by Mark Audio und von uns der passende Bauvorschlag Tuby. I don't know why they aren't listed under the CSS product section. They are also available from Juoigâ.

I managed to find some M3 hex bolts in black on eBay which fit perfectly.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=200376121218

Now my prOblem is that I need the side off the cabinets to be able to get to the back of the bolts. Which means I'm going to need to do all my finishing, which will be Birdseye Maple veneer, with all the hardware including the drivers installed.

Sadly I'm going offshore to work for two weeks starting tomorrow so it's all going to have to wait anyway.

I'm enjoying the build anyway!

try threaded insert fittings; they're available in a wide range of thread pitches, and can be installed either before or after cabinets are assembled and finished

as with many types of specialty hardware, you might find that the minimum order quantity exceeds the needs for this particular project, but you'll likely find excuse to build more 😱

Thanks for the reply chris,

Its a really good idea and I will be definitely following that route.

I have managed to find some in M3 size but might have to order a bag of 100🙄

It also means that I have had to order some slightly different bolts but that is all still easier than trying to finish the cabs with the drive unit installed.

Thanks

Paul

considering that most drivers require at least 4 fasteners, that's "only" 12.5 pairs - and once you're really addicted this hobby that wouldn't take long at all (I've had as many as 5 pairs on the bench at one time)
