Marantz dv9500 muting transistors...

Hi,

I want to try shorting the muting transistors on my DV9500. I can find the 12v mute feed, but I need some help to make sure I don't short across the wrong transistor 🙂

They are the QA04 and the QA13. You may have to remove them instead, though.
Definitely don't short them, since that is what happens when they are muting.
They are connected in shunt to ground, not in series with the signal.

There will also likely be new, loud noises due to operation and/or turn-on and turn-off,
from the lack of muting.

I wouldn't touch the muting circuit on that player. The muting signal is derived as a combination of DC rails mute, and the DAC IC mute. If you disable it, chánces are quite significant you'll be getting nasty pops and clicks.

... you could try, though...

I have shown you how to do it with the least amount of damage (the transistors doing mute duty are dual, in a single package... difficult to desolder, clean the eyelets, and then solder back if you have to)

So, for the left channel, if you lift the DA21 and DA51, pins 2, you will know with certainty if you can live without the muting circuit (pops/clicks). If you CAN, then you can remove the transistors, which will bring the benefit you are trying to achieve. But, it will be a minor benefit that you may not be able to notice... for all the trouble.

It's nice to see an analog output stage done with only a handful of transistors, instead of 2 - 3 OP amp IC's 🙂
