Marantz DV7010 need help with drawer immediately closing after opening

Hello,
I'm looking for assistance with a Marantz DV7010 which I want to use to play CD's out in the garage etc.
Notable observations:
1. plugged in, power off: standby LED is NOT on, it should be.
2. service test: Standby LED does light.
3. power on: no faults listed on display; display checks OK in service test.
4. push open button: drawer extends then immediately retracts

The standby LED is controlled by the main microprocessor so the fact that it is off means something, exactly what I can't find out.

According to searches #4 is symptomatic of a dead/dying laser reader.
Apparently the DVD mechanism is a Pioneer unit and replacement parts are readily available.

I just want to check with all y'all and see if replacing the laser is the best first repair.

Thanks for reading this and I definitely appreciate all comments.

Check that the Switch sensing when the Tray is open is being actuated and it's contacts are clean.
On Pioneer's this was always a favourite.

Also, is it perhaps in some 'Audio' only mode which may kill all the display for quiet 'Audiophile' operation?
Check the Manual for such a function.

Just some thoughts.

I was too optimistic about the belt, the group I ordered a belt from cancelled my order, no stock

I measured the belt with a hole saw:
An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

52.25mm ID
it feels just as elastic as you would expect a 20 year old rubber band to feel.
I reckon I'll search the auction sites for a 2" belt

I pulled out the switch:

Percival, what's the best way to clean this?

thanks
Mac

hello!
I changed the belt
I cleaned the switch doused it with contact cleaner and waggled it a dozen times
put it back together
Voilà! the door opened and stayed open.

it plays DVD's!

it won't play CD's unfortunately.
any suggestions?
oh the standby lamp is controlled by the main ECU. it's still not on when power is off. must mean something.
