Hi,
Firstly, does anyone here have a Marantz DV-12S2 or has had one of these that they can comment on?
I'm thinking about purchasing one of these but what's holding me back is the audio DAC it uses, the outdated CS4392 as opposed to the CS4398's in the DV-9500.
I've read reviews that the DV-12S2 is excellent sound wise but I would agree the DV-9500 is better video wise.
I'm more interested in audio side of things than video, only due to the fact I have no need for DVI or HDMI at the mo and HDMI 1.3 is coming out next year so I'd prefer to get a DVD player then.
I also want to mod whatever unit I eventually get so this may sway my decision. I can source a DV-12S2 for the same price or less than a DV-9500.
The BIG question is, can the CS4392 be swapped out for the CS4398's. I realise they differ in pin numbers but I've heard it can be easily adapted. Is this true?
Or, should I go for the DV-9500 being more current with the better Audio Dac's and apply the mods to it?
Any comments?
I forgot to mention, has anyone modded their DV-12S2?
Cheers

NOT directly ... you would probably have to make a whole new board ...
http://www.cirrus.com/en/pubs/proDatasheet/CS4392_PP3.pdf = page 5 = 20 pin
http://www.cirrus.com/en/pubs/proDatasheet/CS4398_F1.pdf = page 6 = 28 pin
Almost totally different chips. You might be able to do it with a daughter board ... and you may have to do significant mods to the controller, etc.

First, start with the good stuff ... adding mods to taste.

I had an inkling that doing the changeup from CS4392 to CS4398 would be too much of a hassle and the DV-9500 would be a better option to start from as a base.
It's a matter of determining what is a good player, as a base, to start from and work with.
The most important aspect that I'm looking for in a base player is that it has a good SACD/DVD-A/CD component from which to work with.
The other question is whether to buy a player with a descrete output section as opposed to op-amp.
Thanks for the heads-up.

Yes. Truth is one, paths are many ....

Can't help you here. (If op-amps don't make it, then discretes may not either. I have been an op-amp kind of guy for decades ... )

If you can get them for the same price, get the DV-12S2. It might be somewhat older than the DV-9500, but it's original price was a lot higher. It might have been overpriced, as the top cover doesn't reflect it's original price, because it's a thin metal sheet.
Inside, its components are laid out nicely. You can add a SDI output to a DV-12S2, but also to a DV-9500. I have no experience with the DV-9500 but the menu of the DV-12S2 is wonderful. Black background (excellent for the projector), useful options (converting DTS to PCM on the digital outputs). If it detects an audio CD, the video stage and the front display will turn off.. Very nice in all.
