My SE when first turned on will not read a CD. It takes a 1/2 dozen or more tries before you see the tracks come up on the screen. I have replaced the spindle motor with no difference. I have also replace the entire CD section and this didn't solve the problem.
If I leave the unit powered up for a while and then put a CD in it will read it right away. Power supply?

Could be. You need to do two things...
1/ Scope the RF when it is working and make sure the level and quality is good.
2/ Check the rails when its cold and in the faulty state. Use a scope to both measure the DC value and to check for noise/ripple.
