If you have a schematic, I think it's the cap connected to the LO pin on the photo diode signal processor chip (at least on the old philips machines).
The replacement generally needs to be very similar, don't go for a bigger value.

Also, don't use a really low esr cap here as this has also given me problems. Just a bog std el cheapo should be fine ;-)
Also, if you keep you're eye out, you can find players with this mech really cheap!! Some of the early bitstream players are less desirable especially if they are wearing a philips badge (despite being identical to some marantz) I've bagged 2 £5 bargains previously 😉
Cheers guys i knows many cheapos use that laser, bagged a half decent cd63 the weekend 2 quid works too. Grand tally of 16 marantz players here my other half thinks im weird.
cheers alan😀
cheers alan😀
Haha Wish there was a like button on here Alan. I have the same problem with my other half. (Thinks I'm wierd).

My other half thinks you're wierd too Alan. I'd like to know this too. I have 470uF BG N there. Personally I'd give Cerafine and Silmic II a try but interested in other responses.
I find Silmics and Cerefine add a certain grain to the sound. More obvious when using a LM / LME opamp.
Rubycon ZA / ZLG do a decent job. I find them the most linear sounding but as with all decent caps they require a good burn in period.

do you have any in stock also za s and oscons for the dac .
many thx alan
😉
You can buy the ZLG (ZA replacement) from Farnell - 16ZLG470MEFC10X12.5 - RUBYCON - CAPACITOR, 470UF, 16V | Farnell United Kingdom
We don't really sell the Oscons as we need them for our products and upgrades

The player is in the workshop today!
I have removed both C2 clocks and replaced them with our new C3 clocks, lowered the 2x transformer voltage from 18V to 9V so that the current capabilities are doubled and to lower heat. Lowered the two SPower HC voltages feeding the clocks to 6.3V. Decoupled the input voltage to each clock with a Black Gate 470uF capacitor and have fed the signal to dac , decoder and servo via some Missing Link 'Digit' 75 ohm silver coax.
Giving the player a good hour to settle in a bit straight away we can here deeper fuller bass, better separation of instruments and vocals, a little better improvement in the treble. The whole sound is more analogue than ever, listening to 'Jazz at the Pawn shop' and the double bass sounds just like when I hear it live at a jazz club! the texture of each string is easily heard with a natural depth to the sound.
More burning in will improve on this and getting it home will reveal even more.
In a few weeks / months some of the SPower HC regulators will be swapped out for the SPower D regs on the digital rails
I have updated the mods page too -The worlds greatest CD63 !

Awesome Brent, I'm surprised and impressed the C2 was possible to improve upon in such an audible way. I can't want to hear the player!!
Yeah it's epic mate. I will sort that listening session out v soon. One reason I'm cracking on with more upgrades 😉

A bargain!
Mag article shows a MKI badge but the actual player show MKII badge. Totally rubbish advert too!

LMAO
And that ebay listing is not exactly accurate either. I remember reading about 8 years ago that Marantz presented the copper player to Ken to say thanks for all the KI that were sold worldwide. Ken was quoted as saying there is too much copper and it will effect the eddy currents. lol
They then made a limited run of them for £1000 and David Price was given one.
Or I could have just imagined all that! 😕

Haha, I love the comedy bling factor of these. And I love the über-optimistic comments like "can compete with £3000 cd players". More like on a par with a modern £300 player. Cool collector's item, but it's barely hi-fi, just mid-fi.
It won't be long before the blackgates inside are worth the money they are asking for it. 😀
