Cleaning them is not such a bad idea, after all there's still a laser shining on the disc surface, and any stray light caused by a film of dirt will affect the HF signal. Most stuff is perfectly technically explainable.
Funny how the CD has a digital character, but a lot of technique behind it is just analog 🙂

hi ray, ive done some simple mods ie op amps lm4562s iec mains conversion and damped the case and transport on my 63se is hdam by pass next to do
many thanks alan
many thanks alan
I was posting about something else, but just in case Ray is busy bikeral. I think he will say yes. Once you have good op-amps the hdam is only making things worse. I think you will find the procedure on page 1 and 2 of the thread.
Does anyone know where I can buy original vam lasers from on-line. Every time I think iv'e found one I end up with a non-working chinese copy. My cupboard's full of them. There used to be a time when they came in a philips fawn box and with wires. I now find the same is happening with the Sony lasers too. I'm not trying to get them cheap, just real!
bikeral, your next job should be some power supply work. Try adding 7805 voltage regulators on each of the DAC, decoder and servo supply voltage pins. After that you could bypass the HDAM a bit more safely.

If you have a cupboard full of old lasers, check out the threads on repairing them - worth a try.

Seems a lot of working drives have been thrown away when all they require is cleaning on the underside of the lens.
You've got to have good eyesight and a steady hand though !

often on those chineese lasers, all thats needed is the spindle needs lifting slightly.
Worth a try if you have several. I've had a few that just dont work, but I've neve had one that didn't after adjusting the cd mount on the end of the spindle. They've normally be squashed at some point an a small screw driver to lever then up a fraction is enough. Make sure you apply pressure evenly all the way round!!!

Thanks everyone for your input. I'll try sripping and cleaning the old ones and look at the spindle position before I chuck them. Cheers

Press Stop and Play together while switching on.

It's either the laser or in transit the disc platter has dropped. (unless it's a badly modded unit).

hi,
I need a schematic for the cd63 ,Or can anyone tell me the voltage feed pins for the dac, decoder and the servo as i want to run seperate voltage regs for each component many thanks alan

They're all 5V.
IIRC you have +/-10V you should regulate first, +/-12 for op amps. Some other odd voltages like display but not sound related.
