Marantz CD63 & CD67 mods list

Dac datasheet says 2's Complement MSB First. Is that not i2s?

Cheers, Lee

Hi Lee!

Yes it is! You didn't think Philips would use a Japanese format with their own bus, did you? 😀

Here's a PDF on the I2S-bus. Look at page 2, 3.1 Serial Data. It's left-justified, with MSB first on a fixed position. The SM5872 can handle I2S when the 'IIS-flag' is '1'.

There's more on page 16 and 17 of the SAA7345 datasheet, under 'DAC interface'. CD63 and 67 use mode 3.

Thanks Ray!!

No those caps are Nichicon Fine Gold 5600uF. All the regs are commercial basic opamp feedback regs (Audiocom super reg 2's) except for the SAA7220 which has a std 317 in the pic here but now has a twin 317 tracking pre reg. The output stage is simply a pair of single Burson opamps with 2n2 and ???ohm feedback and dc blocking is via 4.7uF Ampohm wire wound. There's also a Trichord clock 4 with another supre reg 2 on it! The clocking is pretty good on this board too as you can get all the clock feeds direct from the divider chip (which would be better with its own reg too!!!) How are you getting on with yours?

And......you have your daughter at the computer already! how's she doing with the pink iron????😱

We postponed the Pink Iron until further notice, we have to work on her hand-eye coördination first. Now she's just poking holes in the carpet 😀. We celebrated her first birthday last weekend! :Present:

Nice setup! I'm still using the standard on-board LM317's. It's my first 1541 DAC, so I want to explore a bit first, see how it sounds. I'm going to use a Flea for clocking and have plenty of Black Gates on the board. It's working now, and almost finished. First impression of the sound is good, but i'm still rolling opamps.

Did you use the on-board 4040 just for the 7220, or did you also clock the 1541 directly? I'm planning to cut the BCK and WS traces to the DAC and hook it up to the 4040 as well. The 176.4kHz is available at Q5.

Regards,

Ray

Aha. Wonderful, many thanks Ray🙂 I must admit, I was wondering why they'd not used their own format, lol.

I'm gonna run out the i2s into my TDA1541 dac box and use the cd63 as a transport.

Has it been a year already since your daughter was born? Wow, time really flies and I still have that joy to come.

Cheers, Lee.

Ah nice. How has she not got it all over her face? If I visit Holland again, can she teach me how to eat so tidily? My wife says I'm terrible, lol.

Another question then: Can the saa7345 accept 11.2896mhz clock? The datasheet seems a little sketchy here, although it does say 8-35MHz on page 2. I'll just have to try and find out🙂

Cheers, Lee.

I think it'll make a better transport than the cd94, with less hassle. I also think that once properly fettled, the tda1541 isn't particularly dark but very well balanced. I had stunning transparency out of it before that more than matched any previous efforts with the onboard cd63 dac.

It'd be interesting to compare it to Brent's cd63 as that thing is really amazing. I suspect they won't sound all that different (in terms of character).

Thanks Ray! I'm a big fan of clocking everything as directly as possible. All the feeds are either direct of via a divider! never evercascade! yep all direct from the 4040. I think there may also be gains running 2 4040's one for the ws and 1 for the bck although I've not tried yet! Obviously both would want nice regs and caps!

I can't beleive a year has passed! 😉
