Re: VRef.
Hi Andy
Folowing Brent´s instructions, I replaced C124 Next to VREF out with Os-Con 220uF 10V and this produced better attack in transients.
After that I placed two srayregs (with gyrator and leds) on the servo and the results where fabulous.
Hope this helps.

In post 578, I mentioned modding the VRef input into the servo.
Did you ever do anything with this ?

Did it play for a while or did not play at all after replacement ?
yep it played for a while, i have a feeling that it has a dry joint on the two pins that are near to the motor(if your looking from the underneath, could this have that effect?
thanks
thanks
Check the wires to the 'home' switch on the new laser assy (traverse) you soldered. Also check the 6 pin connector from the mech, these thin wires can go intermittent on the crimping.

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

Nice BG implementation.😉
Why did you put some caps in horizontal ?
Are those rectifiers stock ?

Hi,
Thin vocals are a feature of the CD63 sound unfortunately, less a trait of BG Standard caps IME, which sound smooth and sweet and appear to emphasise the upper midrange. Perhaps too many BGs will do as you said...

I just modded a player with purely Rubycon ZA and that worked wonderfully, but it's a player with an altogether different character to begin with.

What type of CDP is it ?
How does it sound now ?
I do like ZA also .... seem more neutral than BG but lacking the BG "space" I did not experiment enough to compare fairly.
Hi Ricardo,
It's a Philips CD650, which is based around the cult-classic TDA1541 DAC chip. It sounded quite shut-in when stock but with a pleasing character. With new caps, op-amps & some other tweeks it's lovely, although not a patch on a good CD63 for detail and clarity.

That is somehow reassuring.
Did you do any coax mod on your CD63 ?
That is one of the TBD things in my CDP, but I am enjoying it so much now that I am afraid to have a go at that mod.
ricardo
You're welcome 😉
Yes, I did the main coax mod - the bit from the HF amp to the main PCB at R501 (iirc).
It cleaned the treble up nicely, making the sound less like digital and more like music. Essential for top-end sound.

I was so afraid of that....

There I go again...

I am already thinking about the oportunity to place a reg near the HF pcb.
Maybe I can do all these mods without removing the main PCB.

Ricardo
Hehe, well do you find the treble in need of improvement? I was eventually 100% happy with mine in that department, but only after lots of good regs, 2 x clocks and the coax mod. I don't think many players can do treble like a fully souped up cd63.

Do you mean you made other mods after the photos and put the caps at 45 degree ?

Yes... the treble needs some cleaning up.
I do not dare to remove the pcb "again" so I left the underside hole open (now fixed with scotch tape).
My last mod (dedicated psu + three regs on the dac) where made this way.
I believe I can do the main coax mod this way.
Maybe I should also consider a reg on the small pcb under the mech ?!
What type of wire did you use on the coax ?
Note:
You used the word "was" in your statement... what do you mean ?
Ricardo
Hi Ricardo,
I used good quality coax that I already had, I'm not really sure what parameters you should look for other than good shielding and overall quality.
Brent has a reg on the mech pcb 😉
I say was because I've given up on my CD63. I kept killing it and in the space between I listened to my cheapo Philips CD650. I started to fall for this sound (TDA1541 is "musical") so I have decided to make the switch and have started upgrade work on this. The CD63 is still complete but wanting a new decoder chip, ahem.
Even with all new good quality caps, MKP output caps, LM4562 and Sercal C1 clock the 650 doesn't have as much detail, openness or precision... but I just find I enjoy music more with this player - voices sound more human, piano a bit more like piano and it has better dynamics and chunky bass. It's better on pop / compressed music than the CD63, but the 63 was loads more impressive on well recorded pieces.
When it's up and running again I'll do some more comparisons and see if my fickle audiophile mind has changed again 🙂

Sorry to hear about the decoder.... what happened ? I believe you lost one before
About the philips, I agree that the music is more "normal" and with better bass with that chip, but the Marantz is so much more detailed and spacious that I can not go back (I own a steinmusic with a philips based pcb that i use for comparison)
