Re: Muting relay
Sorry to bump.
How is everyone else dealing with this problem?
Thanks

I've looked at Farnell and they do loads. I specifically looked for silver contacts but they don't seem to have any in the UK.
Can anyone suggest an alternative. It seems silly to go to all this trouble and then put cr@ppy relays in the signal path!
Cheers

Brent built mine. He uses Omron telecomms relays with silver contacts I believe. Try searching this thread for Omron, the part number @ Farnell or RS might come up. Sorry but I don't know it exactly.

My cd pdf has a relay muting cct on it. www.audioupgrades.co.uk/system.shtml
I'll try to find the relay part number which came from RS

Thanks guys.
Got the circuit from Brents mod pdf.
Just place another order with Farnell (5th this week)!

I think maybe it's better to use a circuit that triggers the relay after a second or two of switching on, and then leaves it energised.
There's no need to mute when not playing.
You'll get mechanical clicks and unnecessary wear on the relay.
If there's a small DC offset on your output (which there probably will be if you're using opamps and/or hdam and you've removed the output caps) you'll get small audio pops too
Something like this perhaps.

My CDP always outputs some noise (you can only hear it with full volume and no disc playing, otherwise is masked by the music).
When I live it on, whyle playing a vinyl, the sound degrades considerably (I believe there is a serious crosstalk in the input selectors of my preamp... I must turn the radio off also to hear the TT).
If I use a "normal" mutting circuit controled by the decoder, does it operate whenever there is no disc playing ?
Ricardo
Yes it does. It mutes when skipping from track to track as well.
By the way I do use the circuit I posted a link to.
I use the normally closed contacts of the relay to shunt the outputs to ground, so that they open after a second after powering on. The music is not passing through the relay.
It closes instantly when I power off.
It removes the deafening thump when I turn on, and is quick enough to remove the whooshing sound when I turn off also.
I don't need it to do anything else.
I get no sounds when not playing, even at full volume, so I don't need to mute then.

The relays, transistors and board etc. should be here tomorrow. I'll def just pull the o/p to gnd to mute.
Got to say i'm absolutly floored by what I'm now listening to!
Got the 2 clocks and Mundorfs today and I really need to stop listening to it so I can put the lid back on!
(Brent I've got both of your clocks on board I've removed the Trichord and I wouldn't pay the £150 price tag for it again!)
I've now got 1 ext psu for An DAC & 1 for clocks + about 75% of the mods in the list on page 1 (all in the output stage) and I just can't believe what I'm hearing. I know its old news to you but this is new to me and well...... WOW!
Thanks for sharing 😀 😀 😀 😀

Good work, and plenty of room for more if you want more openness, detail and absence of any grain.
Looking good Ian.
By the way, mine's a CD63 inside a CD67SE chassis - is yours also?
I ask because I thought the green transformers were the standard ones (as opposed to the blue buzzing ones in the SE) but I can see the SE cross brace, and also it looks roomier at the sides, just like mine... (67 case is wider than 63)

I knew you'd like it Ian.
And I knew the missus wouldn't, lol. Nice, neat work too by the way.
Cheers, Lee.

Very astute!!!
I've been buying duds on ebay! I originally modded a 67SE but stopped in favour of a 63 (after speaking with Lee).
I've ended up with a 63SE, 67SE and 2 std 63's all in differing cosmetic condition.
I thought about building in a 63 in the 67SE case, as you say its a little wider but I will end up with a KI chassis at some point so decided to stick with the 63SE case.
After much reading of the service manuals for all the units, and trying to understand the differences, I decided there was no point in worrying about the main board as most of the parts would end up modified. I used the cleanest board for the build and it happened to be a std63. I've not yet removed the silver HDAM covers and components (albeit they are disconnected).
So its a 63SE Mk1 case with a 63 main board.
This has all happened since just before christmas! As Lee pointed out my misses is saying she's a CD widow (not to mention the fact that see wants the dinning room rid of CD players soldering irons and components).

😀
You're quite right about the PCB WRT differences between models - the CD63KI is only worth having for the copper plating (if you fancy that) and the slightly better transformer. For the price difference it's not worth it at all. The KI mods don't address the player's problems very effectively (arguably not at all).

Glad you like them parts, it's nice for me to see the parts I developed being used in others cd player

You should consider placing a Spower on DAC analog (with a dedicated PSU).
Looking forward to hear about your future mods.

go gain after replacing opamps
yea I a newbie - only did 2 mods. damped the case everywhere i could and I replaced the opamps. however there is no gain when playing the unit - I have to turn the volume up to the noon position to hear somewhat normal volume level. if a place my yamaha cd player in the noon volume position I;m blasted out of the room.
opamp are the 627 ones - very expenisve. so what went wrong or is there a way to adjust gain on the new opamps?
