Hi, i have been repairing a Marantz cd5001 cd player and after replacing the laser assembly i have forgotten where each set of springs goes on the cd mechanism assembly. There are 2 sets of springs but one set is softer and one set is a little stiffer. Which set should i use in the front, the softer or stiffer ones? Thanks
Anyone? Ive been using it with the stiff ones in the back but i seem to get skipping on some disks in the same area of the disk between tracks 3-5, ill try to switch them around so the soft ones are in the back and see if that makes a difference.
Sorry no idea but skipping at the same point suggests something like the sled sticking. Make sure any gear teeth are clean and that there is no granulated old grease lurking.
Thanks, that was the other issue I thought I might have. when i swap those springs around ill be sure to re-clean all of those gears with a toothbrush this time and apply some fresh synthetic grease again.
I would think the Stiffer Springs would go at the front where the extra weight of the Spindle Motor is.

I just checked the unit out and I actually had the springs in the right place. I forgot when I put it together the first time that I put the stiff springs in the front to support the spindle motor like percival007 suggested, thanks again for the tip though! I found a little plastic shaving stuck in one of the gears that was making it skip. I cleaned them all again carefully with a toothbrush and it seems to have solved the issue. Thanks everyone for your help.
