Marantz cd-73 skipping tracks

I have recently resurrected my Marantz cd-73.
I bought it as a student some 20 ish years ago. It was second hand then and it cost me an arm and a leg.

I just had it plugged into a basic marantz 'supermarket' set of separates...
I've grown up a bit now, and was putting together my new set of separates and remembered I had this beast.

Out it came and put a cd in .. it all seems to work fine, but the cd reading jumps.. I remember now I had this problem before.
As it jumps all the lights denoting the cd tracks all light up as if its trying to read another track.
It doesn't seem to better or worse at the beginning or end of a cd.

Any thoughts?

@Andy.. Nothing like stating the obvious.. Done that, can you 'tune' the laser? i've heard/read that the transport mechanism coould stick and that can lubricated, but if that were the case, would the skipping not be at regular intervals...

I assumed it is the big, old version with the swing-arm mechanism rather than the newer model.

If it is the newer model, then the transport mech. can suffer from a build-up of dirt at the ends of travel.

This can be cleaned off carefully. The mech. should not be lubricated as such as this can make things worse.
Clean off all traces of old grease.

Do not be tempted to "tune" the laser.
This is a short term fix and will burn out the laser.
Repllacements are cheap enough but beware of Chinese copies.

I'ts definate a big old model dating back to the mid eighties.
I'll clean up the transport, in worse case scenario, how can tell which laser part is required and any idea where I could source it from?
