Jon

If you can wait til I get back to the UK in 4 weeks, I will see what I have in my "junk" box that may be of use.

In the mean time, if you do take the lid off, check out the numbers of the rest of the chipset particularly anything beginning with SAA**** or TDA****

If you can find a service manual, it would be useful.

As for a replacement, my favourite is the Marantz CD60 - VERY underated - TDA1541A DAC chip, proper motorized volume control - very upgradeable.

Excellent, thanks for all the help. I'll probably keep this one (unless I find a higher spec one for peanuts, thanks for the link!) and just tinker with it, thats where most of the fun lies in it for me. Its nice teaching yourself as you go along, especially with all the kind help you guys have been supplying.

Cheers!

Right, just dug out a Cambridge Audio CD player from the garage, strangely enough the model number is CD36! It appears to have a Philips VAM1202/12 mechanism, is the unit worth bothering with? It does have digital out, so I suppose I could always use this with a home made D to A converter.

NEWSFLASH!

Just chatting with my neighbour about my flowering interest in DIY Hi-Fi and he said "well you are welcome to my old CD player, its sat in the shed doing nothing".

I now have a Marantz CD273 for the bargain price of free. I don't know anything about this unit, so it might even be a step back. Have I done well or not?

Thanks gents!

Edit: Forgot to mention, it appears to be a Special edition. That apparently means its got the TDA 1541A S1 (single crown) DAC, as opposed to the TDA 1541, for what its worth.

I was about to email about the DAC chip.

Some cd273 had the standard TDA1541, some had the TDA1541A, and a few had the TDA1541 S.

I have 3 at home and have had several more, none with the TDA1541A S

You may be lucky !!!

Mainly, the special version had better caps inthe power supply and audio stages.

Not familiar with the speakers, I'm guessing, what late 70,s early 80's. The Quad is pretty capable gear -- it has quite a cult following.
You have the makings of a very decent system now with all your "new" CD players.
