I had one of these and yes its fun to mod them, and they are reasonably forgiving and robust. If you look at the money spent on modding these, your probably better off paying a bit more for a later model unit. Digital has improved a lot since these were made. If bang for buck isn't important to you then go for it. Just my opinion, I'm sure many over at the famous thread would give different advice🙂
Don't waste your time. Been there and done that. Too old these days. Surpassed.
What do you recommend then?😕
Why not any average cd player, and buy a cheap ebay dac. Better still, if you can stretch your budget a buffalo dac from twisted pear? The beauty here is that you can add USB music and switch between SPDIF and USB. You might also be able to install a dac inside a cd player and tap the i2s.
Here is something to consider:
The Buffalo-IIISE (Stereo Edition) 2-Channel DAC
or the top combo on the following link:
Products - I2S over USB Audio
I have a buffalo and its exceptional IMO. I would like to try the other one I sent you. Alternatively look at some of the threads on this forum about what people are modding out of China. There are literally dozens of cheap dacs that sound pretty good for the money.

I have owned the highly regarded Marantz CD6004 for several years and it is just OK at best. I just picked up an Emotiva ERC-3 and this wonderful machine walks all over the Marantz. I have read that it sounds better than the stock Oppo BDP105. It even marginally edges out my SACDmods Denon DVD-2900. I have had a love/hate relationship with the compact disc ever since they invented the thing and the Emotiva ERC-3 is the only player I have owned that sounds better than my turntable.
