I'm finally getting to work on a pair of GR Research Paradox-3's I bought back in February and have a quick question. I am making grills of 3/8" baltic birch and would like to use magnets to attach them so nothing shows when they are removed. Grill is approx. 9"x21". I plan on using 4 small Neodymium magnets in the baffle .197"d x .275" t with a holding capability of 1 lb. Anyone done this. Do these sound about the right size?
Thanks ahead,
Dave

I'd use stronger magnets, but that's just me--even if your grill is only 3 pounds and you have 4 pounds of force to hold them in place, I'd be way nervous about someone knocking them off during a show or something.
Are you going to insert the magnets into the baffle and veneer over them, so that nothing shows? If so, factor in the reduction in force due to the distance between magnet and target.
If the magnet will be in contact with the target, then I would have thought that 1 lb force each will be Ok, as that is perpendicular to the magnet (correct me if wrong), so in the vertical direction, friction will be in your favour, and the force required for the grills to fall off will be several times higher.

I dont see why it wouldn't hold.
If you're skeptical, head over to your local Radio Shack. I'm not sure about the particulars of them, but they had some of the strongest little magnets I'd encountered in some time. Had to tug them in the cardboard container just to get them off of the metal shelving.

NdFeB magnets and steel might be a bit hard and might create audible vibrations. one alternate i can think of is the rubberised magnetic strip use in fridge doors.
i figure if you run a strip all aroud your grill youd get enough holding capacity.

Maybe you could use Hard Drive magnets, they are very strong and probably will work through the wood.
Hard drive magnets = GOOD IDEA, but ONLY if you back them with some serious padding, like felt or rubber. If you let those things slam together unpadded, they will shatter, and like a magnet (heh) all the little pieces of magnet will go straight into the eyes of the audience.
Radio Shack rare-earth magnets are good, but it you can find some old hard drives and take them apart, those are even better. My dad and I have amassed quite the collection of 150-pound+ magnets.
Velcro couls also be a good idea, but I guess it doesn't look as pretty...

Yep, that's the plan, good point.
Thanks everybody for the feedback. I think I'll head over to RS and play!

The HD magnets are so powerfull that they will attract a coin through your hand.

they have some nice rare earth magnets. they have small enough ones that you would use like 6 on a grill or something.
