Magnepan active XO?

Hello, everyone.

I'm currently revisiting my old audio hobby and trying out some new things. I haven't done a lot of full-blown DIY stuff, but usually mod and tweak my speakers. My amp setup allows for three-way active amping and DSP controlled XO's and room correction so that gives me a great deal of flex to begin with.

My question about magnepan is: does anyone here have any experience or info about running these speakers in an active setup? I was thinking along the lines of trying out one of their two-ways and switching the passive XO with an active one, along with dedicated woofer units for the bottom end. Are the drivers 8 ohm each wired to 4 for the stock speaker? And so on...

Many thanks in advance for any input!

Hi,

Yes. the Magneplanars can be used with active cross-overs. You can get more information on the Magneplanar User Group, MUG : Magnepan Users Group or Magnepan 1.6 Active Crossover .
Please, notice that the various models have different requirements. What model are you interested in?

Roger

I was thinking about trying one of the smaller, two-way models. Maybe the MG-12. There is a lot of good info on the MUG site, thanks for the link!
I'm pretty used to modding speakers but I'm not an electro-engineer, so my primary concern is just whether there are precautions I need to take with planar drivers that don't apply to cone drivers.

Anyway, thanks for the feedback!
