Magico Drivers

Hi Wolf!

Nice pics. 🙂

I saw about 2 dozen mid/woofer drivers while at Magico. They all had the Seas rubber boot around the magnet. That's not to say other brands weren't also used. Like I said, I can only go by how little I saw. 🙂

Magico claims to use a 10um diamond coating on the SS Be domes, so not exactly off-the-shelf.

I'm also not hugely invested in what Magico uses or not, by the way. While I envy their aluminum fabrication, and cash flow I was not moved. I wish them and their fans lots of success.

Best,

Erik

World's toughest material for speakercones, but alas better not touch it 🙂

I asked and they assured me that the drivers were no more or less rugged than your average driver,

I remember reading, they where made from the same special material as helicopter rotor's + a grown man could stand on them easily. Maybe earlier model 🙂. -edit- Found part of the quote: http://www.theabsolutesound.com/articles/the-technology-behind-the-q7/

Magico Chief Technical Officer Yair Tammam says:
"This cone is woven from a carbon-nanotube material originally designed for helicopter blades where light weight and stiffness are absolute requirements."

"You can put this cone upside down and stand on it and nothing will happen to it," says Wolf."

Shrug..... I'm pretty sure the Seas motors had the carbon fiber cones. Maybe these were all for the S1 Mk II they were about to introduce??

Someone buy a pair and disassemble it so we can know for sure! 😀 😀

Like I say, not too worried either way, I won't be replicating what I heard there anytime soon. 🙂

It seems the biggest difficulty is getting the Mid Woofer and the Woofer.

On Ebay I found a couple of finished Magico drivers publications.

The Realistic option seems to me is to try to make a variant of the Magico Mini Originals.

Of these to the Teeter is still available, even so, I think the best option is to use test: Scanspeak Illuminator D3004 / 6640-00 1 "Tweeter Beryllium Dome.

The Woofer is very difficult to get, the Volent Paragon VL-2, use the same Driver. Beyond that you have to expect a stroke of luck to get them, so I have to find the best alternative. For this I am studying the characteristics of different Woofers and apparently there is on the market a Titanium woofer like the original, the ones that are closest to it seems to me are those of aluminum sandwich.

These are the ones that I have in mind:

SEAS Prestige L22RN4X / P (H1208)
8 "Aluminum Cone Woofer

Are there any other woofer that you have to consider?

The SEAS based bass drivers for Magico.

They did use XLS/XXLS drivers at one point, but they've clearly had a custom unit made from SEAS too. This looks like their L26ROY line.

Good find! Looks like a similar Matt black finish used on the discovery 10". The woven cap with the Matt finish is a bit odd IMO

I'm Looking for a reasonable similar curve than ATD 18W4004-AGTi

Beautifully flat between 100 and 700 Hz

I think we should also keep in mind that the Woofer should have most of these features:

30Hz -? Hz CrossOver Cut

Sensitivity: 91.5 dB

Nominal impedance: 4 Ohm

To take advantage of the range of twitter, how often should I make the cut?
I'm thinking about 700 Hz
(I know that will depend on the Woofer that can be obtained)

The curve of the Görlich-Podszus TT 170 looks quite like the Original, but there are 3 things I do not like about this driver:

1) It is 8 Ohm (the original Tweeter and woofer are 4 Ohm)
2) The sensitivity is much lower than the Original and the Tweeter
3) I did not find reviews of this driver

The ATD driver is not completly unobtanium. But sort of. You have to buy 50 pcs: Chassis ATD-Serie \| Expolinear

Cloning without the same mid is senseless IMHO. I would not worry a bit about the 10 inch woofer beeing Wavecor, Seas or Scan Speak. All great performers in the "alu cone" piston movement department. Just buy the one with the best specs. But at least the mid/ tweeter section should be close to the original. The crux of the Magico's seems extreme engineering without taking shortcuts. Cloning will neither be easy or cheap. Just like the original. I don't get cloners at all, so will refrain from further commentary.

Thanks 5th! I feel validated now. 🙂 I only make up about 60% of the stuff I post. 🙂

Sad about the Seas Roy drivers though. I was eying them for a future sub project.

Interesting!! I saw that photo but didn't click on it. It just appeared to be the XXLS/Discovery like they always used before. Now that 5th posted it- I see the frame and the magnet boot do closely resemble that of the L26ROY, but the cone still looks like that of the XXLS.

Erik- what do you mean 'sad about the Roy drivers though'? The price?

Later,
Wolf
