so i aquired one cheap in amazing cosmetic condition known broken state.

for parts board but desided befor i butcher it see if its fixable.

got a regular 1604 vlz thats in horible cosmetic condition but works well after a good cleaning.

anyhow

so i get it home power it up the vu meters are maxed out
i plug into its outputs and get nothing and the phantom power apears to be stuck on
i can make the mute lights go on and off ect and the pfl lights

so i take the back panel from the other working board and plug that into this board blam now it works and phantom power is now off.

sept when i take off all the pfl settings i get a pulsing noise and the light blinks so i put the back plane back on the good board mess around see if i can reproduce the blinking light to see witch it does.

would the ribon cable be the cause of this?
im guesing the psu fried from sitting in a studio being it has no scraches on it other then an inland audio searial number engraved in it

got the psu open and dont see any signs of it going bad gues next step is a meter.

anyone run into issues like this before?

When I see the VU maxed like that, I often find a missing DC supply voltage at one or more (or all) IC. Swapping a board fixed that, but doesn't tell us where the problem is.

Doesn't matter what the PS looks like, as long as it puts out all the voltages. SO I'd be looking for the pair of +15/-15, +48, and if it uses it for logic +5.

Mackie had a lot of trouble with ribbons, and almost always they are solved - at least for the near term - by pulling each one half off and then shoving it back down.

Hey there,

I have a the same Mackie board with similar problems to yours. I disassembled it this morning to see if I could find any obvious suspects, but nothings so far. Have you had any luck finding the trouble with yours? Thanks.

I seem to have fixed mine - will do a final test tomorrow. Found that the ground cable from power supply to chassis wasn't screwed down tight. Also replaced one of the ribbon cables. Cleaned all the jacks. I spent almost all day working on it - completely tore it down to the circuit boards. I am glad I finally fixed it though - it has been sitting idle for a year and your post inspired to me get off my *** and see what could be done. Thanks.

Yeah grounding had that issue with my first one when I had it apart

I'll take a look again at that see if it fixes that
