Hi!
I am building an amplifier and I have designed an enclosure for it (in my mind). I'm now researching wether it's feasible.
I have found a website that sells custom size alumium gutters. My idea is to order 2 of these, one wide and short, one long and narrow, so they fit onto eachother like a box. I would order rather thick alumium, like 5mm perhaps so the enclosure can easily function as a heatsink for the amplifier as well.
So that is the basic idea. My questions are the following:
What tool could I use to bevel the edges at a 45 degree angle?
What tool could I use to reduce the length of the alumium, should it be a little bit too long for a snug fit?
I have a power drill, ideally I could use that, but I went to the local DIY warehouse, and they told me they didn't know if it was possible using a drill, and they didn't have any bits that could do it.
I would have no issue with, and would even prefer it, if it's some general tool that I would have to build a small bench for to get straight edges. I would prefer not to spend a lot of money on something I could only use for building (aluminium) enclosures 🙂
I plan to finish it either by brushing and coating it, like this guy does: DIY Brushed Aluminium Audi A4 - YouTube or having it anodized somewhere. If you've got tips there that'd also be awesome 😀
Thanks!
p.s.: If you're interested in the amp I'm building, I've got a thread here: http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/solid-state/238964-how-do-i-find-out-amp-i-should-build.html

How does one get 5 mm thick gutters?
A router table can be used to bevel, albeit at slow speeds.
A chop saw, or a miter saw with metal cut-off wheel, could be used to shorten it.

Well the thickness isn't the issue, apparently it's quite common to have thick extruded alumium U profiles. But I just rechecked and noticed they don't sell them at 300mm width, so there goes my little plan. They do sell custom bended aluminum at those dimensions, but that's twice as expensive. So it looks like I've got to rethink my design, or ponder if it's worth 40 euro to me.
Here I can order a gutter that's also wide enough:
Aluminium op maat - Aluminium variabele afdekplaat vaste zetting van Zetwerk op Maat in iedere gewenste doorsnede en in ieder formaat verkrijgbaar! at 4mm thickness, but it would be ~20 euro per piece.
Maybe I should just buy aluminium plate, and have someone bend it for me somewhere, or think of a way of making the enclosure out of plates, which would be cheap, but require a lot of screws (my plan was to make a case with no visible screws).
Thanks for the tips! I don't mind it being slow, I don't plan on building many 😀
