LXmini

sub

I made SB12 based on Beyma enclosure designs (2009 edition):
https://www.beyma.com/uploads/descargas/1399359845.pdf

I only used B&C 12TBX100 driver as T/Ss are a number for number match to Beyma driver. On LXMinis' woofers I only added a 60Hz HP filter (LR?; do not remember) to 2x10Hd dsp file, on top of SLs bass boost which I left alone in the file. I placed the sub in a corner; dropped the gain on the sub channel by ~14dB and tuned delay (all by ear; 15min to get it right). much of the space is open to adjacent rooms and all is irregular shape with angled walls and such; it worked out great. one could swear the bass is coming from the LXminis (which in turn is mind boggling for their size 😀; so I let the visitors drop their jaws before I tell them that the bass is really coming from the corner behind).

since I added the sub LXMinis can play all music. before that they were quite limited and I did not like it. (granted they had all the positives about the sound stage etc.). before adding the sub they still could play selected material very well, like George Michael's "Faith" for example, (with organ sound at the beginning). but they lost it on anything with strong bass and vocal at the same time. now with a sub they are really adding to the experience of listening to a live concert while watching it on a video; so Ariana Grande live sounds great. they still have limitations when it comes to pieces where there is a lot going on at the same time (like Mark Anthony or classical orchestra etc.) so a version of LX521 is in the cards for me, plus finishing my OBs:

which have been sitting in a corner forever with no XO and waiting for diy amps. 🙁. but I am getting there.

OK I built them.. yes, the soundstage is truly AWESOME (this is a room 4mx4mx 2.5m high) and far bigger than my room. For orchestral they are fantastic, and Enya becomes even more ethereal, but for nearly all electronic/electric stuff (which has probably been quantised) I found the 'smear' due to lack of time alignment too much. They are amazing but not my taste.

P.S. - I asked one question earlier that hasn't been addressed - can I use my existing box cabinets and just place them on their backs on my stands, thus having the woofers firing upwards? I would then install the high frequency drivers onto the "upper" areas of the existing baffles in the forward-firing configuration, center-aligned with the woofer, per spec.

Well, you can do whatever you want but one of the design objectives of the LXmini system was to create minimal baffle area for the woofer driver, AND utilize a smallish driver as well.

You could orientate a set of conventional speakers on their *** and attach a "tweeter" driver to it, but the result would be considerably different than a configuration like the LXmini. There have been a variety of variations-on-a-theme of the LXmini. Just identify your objective and try to build to it.

Dave.

Thanks Dave - the objective at this point is to spend as little money as possible and re-use as much stuff that i already have as possible. I will not be using a tweeter facing forward - i will be using the LXmini configuration to get the dipole/open baffle effect, but probably go with the Vifa driver here - https://sites.google.com/site/cdenneler/home/lxc

I will also go passive on the XO - but at relatively the same crossover frequencies in the LXmini design - this will save having to purchase the miniDSP and separate amplifiers.

Yup - going REALLY cheap on this one, for now. I have very good Usher 8945P 7" woofers, and they will be good for higher SPLs and stronger bass, although I will be using a sub anyway. In the future I think I'll go with PVC pipes for the woofers, to get the infinite transmissions lines, and I will trim down the baffles to minimize their area. it seems really convenient to use my existing box baffles, as they already have cutouts for the woofers and i can trim them as needed to achieve the original design objectives.

*) HDF is a modern high density wooden material, that avoids the downsides of MDF (soaking edges, etc).

HDF in dark anthracite:
It is an extremely robust high density, black coloured wood fibreboard (>1,000 kg/m³).
Its high strength across the complete board cross section facilitates three-dimensional processing without any risk of fraying. It is a natural material made of wood which defibres gently and is manufactured according to ecological principles.
An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

HDF can be used as extremely compact, robust support board. Thanks to its black colouring and the compact product structure, the board can also be used as an attractive surface without additional coating.

HDF is ideally suited for applications requiring ecologically sustainable material due to its environmentally compatible manufacturing.
