LXmini by Linkwitz, do they live up to their reputation?

I'm thinking of building the LXmini speakers by Linkwitz (RIP), for those who don't know about those speakers check here: LXmini Challenge

I'm honestly interested because i heard they're somewhat tolerant to imperfect room placement and because of their small size.

Did anyone here build them? How was the experience?

Pros and Cons?

I built LXmini about 5 years ago, also have a set of Orion 3.3.1 that I built 11 years ago. The LXminis are in the family room where they are used for both music listening and as TV speakers, Orion in the living room for music only. The sound character is consistent between the two with Orion going notably deeper in the bass register and having a good bit more capacity to play loudly without strain. As to placement the minis want to be at least 2'-3' (0.6-0.9m) from a back wall and I find they work best if the distance between the speakers is at least as large as the distance to the listener. The sound is good across the listening room so you don't need to pin yourself in a narrow "sweet spot" like some speakers. I drive the minis with an amp using Tom Christiansen's Parallel 86 amps for the low frequency drive and Modulus 86 for the full range and it's a sweet match for the LXmini. The whole setup with speakers, amp and MiniDSP probably don't exceed $1,000 in cost and I consider that a great bargain in audio.

I have a late Orion version and listened a number of times on the LX521 and AA Beethoven Elite. I also heard the LXmini (demonstrated by Linkwitz himself at Burning Amps 2018). I was impressed by the LXmini, it sounded pretty much like the bigger brothers. Like Kevin says, the SPL capacity is the biggest difference between the various Linkwitz designs.

That must have been an experience 😱

i built a pair. the beaming of the fullrange driver is noticeable, and they may be a tad brighter than what you might expect.
can be shouty with more active music. if you listen to rock n roll, metal or similar econowaves are much better. treble dont even compare to cheap jbl pt/selenium d220..
other than that they do have great imaging, and are somewhat good for vocals, jazz etc.

these have very good imaging near field, like a pair of headphones. Nice clear sound with some prat, i just completed the asp and prefer it to the stock minidsp (bypassed the output capacitors for a more direct sound)

they look like a conversation piece and can be completed in a day. Don't think they are shouty ( i have the fe126 and b200). Other than Spl, i dont think it has obvious weaknesses as a 2 way, omni polar (mostly), active design. you might have to manage grounding between the 4 amplifiers as humming is common with the minidsp.
