Thanks for the input guys. I just wanted to give a quick update on the mods. Unfortunately, I couldn't access the underside of one of the boards without doing some serious excavation and replaced what was easy: I removed all the caps around the power supply and replaced them with audio quality Nicihcon keeping all values approximately the same. I also replaced three opamps (one didn't seem to work in the circuit) using the OPA2134 with adapters.
I hooked it up to an old Kenwood KR-4400 with some Definitive Technology speakers and popped in Muddy Waters', "Folk Singer". Holy cow, this thing blew me away. Before the mods, the sound was smooth, but didn't have much openness or punch. After, it is like night and day. It lost some of the smoothness, but the music gained a lot of presence. It sounds better than my NAD C525BEE (!), which I just removed from my main system tonight.

Don't worry. It should get considerably smoother over the next few hundred hours of playing time.
