I'm dealing with a Luxman D-103u for a recently-widowed friend who is clearing her house. It's been stored for a few years and looks to be in decent condition, but it doesn't recognise most CDs. The few it does recognise seem to play fine.
Checking round the forums suggests that this is classic failing laser behaviour. Before replacing the laser unit (I believe it's a KSS152a which seem to be still available) I was wanting to check what I should try first.
I've removed the cover and found how to access the laser, and I've ordered some materials to start by cleaning the lens. If that doesn't work I've seen a suggestion that tweaking the laser power may work - I've located the pot on the optical unit, downloaded the service manual and have a scope available. One question is if I make a mess of the tweak will anything be damaged other than the laser unit, which would be changed as the next step anyway?
Finally, if I end up having to put in a new KSS152a are there any things I would need to set up or should be aware of?
Thanks for any help.

The service manual will show the test point and correct pp value of the eye-pattern. Adjust the laser output. You will not cause any damage by doing this. The full span of the pot is around 300 degrees; turn the pot clockwise for approximately 2-3 degrees - that should do it. Use a correct screwdriver for the job. Do not apply any stress to the pot because you may damage the laser pick-up springs that hold it centred.
CD's reflectivity vary a lot. Use those that play correctly at the moment, and adjust the eye-pattern to sit at its maximum suggested value.

A soft and slightly teased out cotton bud, and some clean distilled water with a single drop of detergent added is all you need to clean the lens. The water can be got from steam from a kettle onto a cold metal glass etc. You only need a tiny amount.
