Lumenlab - your opinions about them?

Re: Re: Re: Lumenlab - your opinions about them?

I am too lazy so I will post your quotes as "this was said by you".

"it makes an already big projector even bigger and bulkier, as you have to put it outside, it needs cooling, while coil ballast can be put inside without any problems"

I guess the output placement for the electronic is an advice since it is designed to disipate heat. The lumenlab projector is basically designed with air cooled (fans) so actually I would say the inside ballast setup should not fail either if a propper cooling is designed.

"electronic ballast can be noisy, and you can hardly do anything about it, if your happens to be the one (coil+ignitor can be too, but there are ways to make it quiet)"

I never owned one so I can´t tell you about that, but they have a stated noise level smaller than coils in teory. http://www.universalballast.com/techSupport/trouble_shooting/elct-qa.html

"it's announced by LL members to allow a quicker restrike, while the limitation to MH bulb restrike time is not a feature of the ballast, but of the bulb itself"

you are wrong here. The lamp does behave diferent when coil ballast ignition (50-60Hz) or electronic ignition is used. It is a proven fact that electronic higher frecuency ignition is shorter than coil ignition restrike time.

"it's much more expensive, and this expense does not translate to better quality of final projector"

yes, the electronic is more expensive, but you are paying better techonolgy here. Longer BALLAST life (compare coil ballasts life expectancy and eballast life expectancy) and better light output overal. This does necesarilly mean better image output (in terms of brightness and CRI variation). The eballast is known to make lamps work in a better way (less variations).

"there is electronics inside, that can fail, this is very rare for simple coil and ignitor"

We should compare life expectancy of the two systems to say what is the rare case. You will see the eballast is like 5 times longer life stated than the coil ballast.

"Yes, it's lighter than coil, but who cares, these projectors are not portable anyway. It's also supposed to be regulated, and so extend the life of the bulb, nobody has confirmed that yet, and there are also electronic ballast, that are not regulated"

the lighter parameter is a very important factor since you are planing to send it by postage for instance. Maybe you are going to pay 3 times the shipping charges because of the coil's weight.
There are some eballast that do dim the lamp, I don´t think this one from brain does it, something is absolutelly not posible on single coils.
