Just running out to hear Iphigenie -- but here's a graph of the LR8N3 regulator with and without the adjust pin bypassed. For comparison I have thrown in the LastPAS Regulator as well.

I thought that there was something wrong with that chart -- so used a 680uF cap to cure the F3 problem. Here's the new chart:
Here's the test setup which I used -- the switch is closed when the electrolytic is discharged to about 20V -- this makes it safe to connect to the HP3581.
