RCA re-packaged Nuvistors in smaller cans and wrote a VERY detailed report on the project. The assembly jig is of past interest but the curves of hiss and transconductance versus heater voltage apply to many practical questions.

It looks like if you have a 10mA tube, but work it at 1mA, then underheating the cathode is not bad, may be good. See pp148+.
