midrange drivers dont make bass.
bass drivers make bass.
make a 40 liter sub
basically limited to typical 8" maybe some 10"
auto calculate a butterworth alignment.
then your all done.

Is putting the speakers in 2 corners of the room an option? The boxes could even be designed specifically with a "1/2 pi steradian" radiation pattern in mind.
I think anyone would like a good 30Hz response from delicate FR drivers while perched on sleek bookshelf stands in the middle of the room, but, the laws of physics...
I have tested corner placement of speakers - even 1 speaker in the corner (photo), with window, heating radiator in it AND drywall (4 layers of gypsum board total and mineral wool filling inside) on the side has tremendous positive effects on bass, even the smallest bookshelf speakers start to act as a subwoofer. The problem is that the dog's bed is there and her majesty well being is more important than my bass boost. Opposite corner is also taken, and also has a window, so the only placement option is very close to TV, so no true corner placement
30Hz is a long shot, I am aiming at 40-45Hz. As I told: ground space is at premium, I even have small ceiling mounted speakers as satellites for movies at the sides of listening position. Tall and skinny is the way to go, so probably it will be unfolded MLTL.

Please stay on the topic. Subwoofer is gone. Maybe it will be back if I get a "stroke" of creativity and start to do small reconstruction project to lay wires and put it somewhere in the ceiling corner. that 0,2-0,25 square meters of extra ground space is at premium, also I like minimalist approach to things.
I am on topic , bass in small place = woofer
you said you are comfortable with 40 liter
so make 40 liter.
a lot of people are leaning towards woofer assisted wideband or WAW
it allows a smaller wideband for better highs. and woofer for better lows.
Agree tower is the way to go. footprint is very small.
but vertical unlimited till you hit ceiling. so 40 liter not a limit actually
since tower has small footprint but allows larger volume.
What is the dimensions of tower you are comfortable with

Then maybe look at the Alpair 10.3 pencil design on the Frugal-Pile site: http://frugal-phile.com/boxlib/pensils/Pensil103-plan-300114.pdf Groundplan is like 241x318mm for that cabinet and that goes to that tuning (a bit lower actually i thought)I have tested corner placement of speakers - even 1 speaker in the corner (photo), with window, heating radiator in it AND drywall (4 layers of gypsum board total and mineral wool filling inside) on the side has tremendous positive effects on bass, even the smallest bookshelf speakers start to act as a subwoofer. Now I am researching also big Pluvias, CH series and SB Acoustics SB20FRPC30-8. There is surprisingly little info about those lesser Markaudio series. And I think will buy SB20 today. If they fail in my atempt, they could be used somewhere else.
Check the CHN110, those are actually the best in generating bass without loosing good mid and top of the Mark Audio line, and in general in fullrange speakers in my opinion. They need a much bigger cabinet (about 2x the size) than the Mark Audio Alpair 10.3 altough. And the CHN110 is also cheap, about the same as the SB20, but much better. Now I am researching also big Pluvias, CH series and SB Acoustics SB20FRPC30-8.
