Loudspeaker for TUBE DIYer

Hi all,

As all DIYer TUBE amp in the world, after building an amp, we always use a lost of time to fix and correct this amp to match with our satisfy.

After 3rd completed tube amp, I am having a matter with my reference speaker. Becuz I tested and fixed with those so when I took my amp to another system, another sound I got.

So, could you commend which loudspeaker is good enough for testing our DIY TUBE amp?

I am looking for JBL monitor. But in my country, there is not much JBL monitor. Other wise, I love vocal at low-mid (such as Leonard Cohen, Louis Amstrong ...) So I got some lacking in JBL monitor like L100; 43xx series.

Or, could you introduce your reference system when you test your DIY amp? Included CD player, Speaker, Cable...

In my mind, I am haveing a project to build up a pair of speaker use JBL driver. In this case, active xover is a problem. Berihnger is a choice, but it is not tubey!!! How do you think about LE175 and 2235??? Or some older series, kinda LE85 and LE15??? What is the best for low wattage of tube amp????

Thanks for your attention and love to see your reply.

Check out the full range loudspeaker forum on diyaudio, they discuss some very efficient and cost effective designs using primarily the Fostex drivers.

I built a small "test" pair myself and am very impressed with the imaging & detail especially with the kind of music you mention.

Cominup,

How many watts RMS per channel do you have available with the low powr tube amps you make? Are these SET? Can it drive 4 ohm as well as 8?

You could look for the High Efficiency Loudspeaker website.

I have a Leonard Cohen CD and know the sound you are after. That will not be easy with a low power amp unless you have very good and efficient speakers. Fortunately there are some vintage speakers out there that may do the job quite well.

I manufacture a speaker of my own unique design (in my avatar) that is probably just what you want but with shipping overseas they would be hugely expensive. If money is not a problem please feel free to send me private email.

Thanks rcavictim and philipbarrett,

rcavictim, full range is the first choice for us at this point. In some range of sound, we know that it could not perfom what exactly our amp can do. Mean that Monitor Speaker pretty meets our requirment.

Phillip, could you give me some more detail pics of your huge driving wheels. I am pretty sure that I could not ship those becuz of my listening room is not huge enough. But there could be some experience to study, and we got so many DIYer courier of your production.

My SE amp has just got less than 8W. At this power, they could not drive JBL 43xx series with full 43xx's ability. So, some monitor speakers from European could meet our wish, couldn't they???
