Lothwer OB Eminence Alpha 15As or Augie

Just ran across some pro ported 18" subs that appear to be fairly high quality at a local pawnshop and am really considering picking those up to be the bottom end for the stereo. They would have a dual use, as I also play in a band. The idea would be to build a moderate sized open baffle for my 1808s and use them together with the 18" speakers going up to around 150 Hz. I realize they won't blend with the 1808s as seamlessly, but they should certainly be able to move some air.

Thanks Nelson,
I understand better now why your preference is the PM6A. So, in a OB, it is important to have a driver flat response because there is no box to make any correction of the peaks?

Did you tried the Augies? I think they are Eminence as well and the price is affordable.

I have a dumb question, but, knowing the cancellation waves effect of the OB, if I put two bass woofers for each speaker, it would be a cancellation between them in front of of the speaker??..

The PM6A that you use, is a STD production?. Which type coil, aluminium?

I played with the AE's and they were very nice, but I have
stayed with the Eminence because they also sound good and
their price is within the range of most DIYers. Most of my
work on this has revolved around DIY.

I had an early pair of PM2A's that I didn't like as much, but
I think it's a case of comparing an earlier whizzer design
without the folded edge compared to the later ones. My
favorite Pm6A is the 16 ohm version - not as sensitive, but
smoother and less peaky response.

😎

Ticonal..means that it is not std?

Ticonal's are not standard.

"ticonal, a permanent-magnet alloy that uses the same elements as alnico—aluminum, nickel, copper, iron, and cobalt—but adds a dash of titanium for the sheer reckless fun of it." From Stereophile.

I had to wait a long time to get a used pair of Ticonal magnet's in the form of PM5A's with no high ferric coating and copper voice coil. Jon Ver Halen in lowther-usa put me on a waiting list. Previously used DX4's which IMO sound totally different. Less relaxed, less tone. In any case, any lowther will sound good in OB, The bass is harder to get ironed out. My recommendation is to bi-amp.

Thank you.. I think I will start a new thread with my project. More I am reading, more difficult to make the choice !. For the bass drivers, I dont see too much problem for the choices (AE, Augie, Eminence Alphas, etc) with a dsp.
But for the medium and highs, there, I really dont know.
Or Lowther (Which one??), or Fostex, or other full range....or a good high end medium woofer with tweeter....anyway for the fullrange choice I am reading that the use of a tweeter would be necessary to have a full performance..

Abelma, I still use a tweater. adds a bit of air to the soundstage.
It's a Fostex T90A-EX. I would try a cheap one first to see how well they integrate.
Fostex, one's I have heard, are less detailed, but have a sweet golden sound to them. Good tone. Vastly less expensive than lowthers. You can always upgrade later to Lowther.
Despite the speakers, the crossover - passive or active, will be what you play with most to get it right.

Nelson,

Would you be able to provide some values for the passive xo?

Beta15 at 80Hz, Lowther/Featrex at 150Hz
Passive is best with single pole LR (LP) and CR (HP) networks.
The values must be adjusted against the baffle size.

Values at different baffle sizes (from the marriage-destroying 3 ft to sneak-it-into-the-livingroom 1.5 ft) would be awesome!

The Beta15s are great bang-for-buck and most would be able to play with them.

Zobels needed?

Thanks,
Jeff

Looks like open baffle take a very long time to explore; Nelson, don't get me wrong, I just want to say that with the Open Baffle, there are so many variations and combination, each of them with their strengths /weaknesses so it become very hard to define what sounds best. For examlple, I have tried 1st order crossover, and liked the naturalness of the sound most, but the bass was sort a weak. 2nd order crossover gives better bass and firmer sound, but something gets lost on the way-it doesn't sound so enticing. So the quest continues... 🙂
