ive had my projector setup for about a week or two now. Everything has been great until last night.. something weird happened. Here is my setup
dukane 4003 ohp (4000lumens 410w fxl) bulb is only a week old
sharp QA 1150 projection panel
white heavy duty shower curtain screen
well i usually keep my contrast set at about 75-85% up it gives a good lighted picture without a lot of glare
last night my picture started out normal.. but then i noticed the contrast needed to be turned up a bit so i did.. it worked, but then it seemed like it got dim again, so i turned it up more, problem temporarily solved again, but it didnt stop until i had the contrast turned all the way up and the picture was still way dimmer(contrast wise-my brightness function is usually almost all the way up) than normal, i got scared....what's going on i only had the setup on for about 10mins. Im pretty sure i have adequate ventalation.
Is my lcd panel burning out??? Did my 410w fxl bulb loose some brightness somehow in a matter of 5-10mins?? Im just a lil confused. Also this has nothing to do with it but what is the PHASE button on my projection panel?? i fiddle with it but i cant see any changes happening.

ok so i go to check my setup out again tonite to see if i have the same problem.... click.. click click, my bulb doesnt light up. I've had the bulb for maybe a week at the most! how could it be blown already?? here's the thing..
I pull the bulb out.. its not blown!.. it just wont light. The springy thingy lol that lights up when the bulb is on is all there and connected. I just turned the ohp on and nothing came on at all. I also noticed that the last bulb did the same thing. they both have small cracks in them too.. dont know how that would happen but the bulbs are still intact and all the wires look solid and connected inside the projector. Why are my bulbs not lighting?
would it have anything to do with not using the ground wire that plugs in the wall (using an extention cord w/out a ground)?? after i plugged it into a ground outlet nothing still came on, i guess its too late the bulbs are not coming on. I cant afford to buy new bulbs every week.. any ideas anyone???..
when i get this bulb thing figured out i can work on my contrast issues again (if i have any)
thanks guys

I've heard that using too high of a voltage will fry a bulb pretty quick, I would make sure you're OHP isn't giving the FXL too much juice. Some OHP's have different settings for voltages, perhaps yours does and it needs to be changed?
the ohp scecifically says use only 410w fxl bulb only.
i got 2 new bulbs yesterday, if they blow as quick as the 1st two did then im done with this ohp project, also it seems my contrast issues are still there, i couldnt even finish watching (wes craven's THEY)a movie last night, got fed up and turned the tv on. It was too dark to see anything. I never had any problem's before.. im just confused.
has anyone had contrast problems before??
should i just sell my projector and lcd panel, and try for a better one?.. i dunno everything was FINE last week, lol.. grrrrrrrr

ok.. i got a tip from a buddy of mine at work and he said that if the bulbs have cracks in them then it is definitely an overheating problem, I figured someone on this board could tell me that before him but o well. So im gonna try not to block up the inlet and outlet holes anymore as much and maybe try to feed this thing more cool air.
It has 1 fan blowing the hot air out on one side. the other side is where the cool air comes in.... I thought about putting a fan on the other side to blow cool air in. Anyone tried this? If so where and what kind of fan did you use and how did you hook it up?
any help would be greatly appreciated

Xtra Fan
I know very little about the whole diy projector thing, (I 've just been lurking a few weeks) but I have worked in the HVAC industry. (engineering)
Putting another fan at the inlet will have very little effect, It would only offset some of the friction loss (drag) of the inlet grill and it will never push more than the cfm capacity of the exhaust fan. A more sensible approach might be to:
A) remove some of the grills from the inlet to lessen the friction loss (your fan likely will pull more cfm (volume))
B) make sure there is nothing inside the box that blocks the air from moving directly over the bulb. If it is not alreading doing so you might want to consider placing a vane in the airflow path to direct some of the airflow over the bulb. Don't take all of the air as I suspect there may be other things that need to stay cool.
C) If you wanted another fan maybe you should put it near the other fan, exausting as well.
Just some Ideas🙂

hey thanks for the tips! I would have never known any of that... I think I will just cut away at a couple of the grille pieces to let more direct air in. I also have both bulbs inside (has a bulb switcher). Maybe if I take the one out i'm not using it will help cool the bulb that is on. It only takes a sec to install a bulb anyways.
still having contrast problems with my lcd panel though(qa-1150), Im thinkin bout selling it and gettin a 1500 or 1650. Anyone think this is a good idea??
