Hey guys. I looking to build a new subwoofer in a sonotube. I'm looking for a 15" that have some good xmax. Will speen no more then $200 $250 pushing it. I was looking at the Stryke AV15. I want to tune it to 16-20hz. What side sonotube should i go for and a good place to get it. I tryed Low's and Home Depot.

Well i just order the AV15 Subs at $180.00. Now i just need to find some 20" or 24" sonotube. Can someone tell me where I can order some sonotube. I don't know what side walls it need to be.
Call your local building suplpy stores. They should carry it. It is called sonotube (brand name) or cement form tubes.

Ok. found a local place to get sonotube....but they just have 18" and 24" at 12ft long. The 18"-12ft is $34 and the 24"-12ft is $55. Would the 18" be ok for a 15" sub with the port at the top or the 24". The sub i'm going with it the AV15. I'm thing of the 24" if the walls are thicker then the 18. If i go with the 18 it will be 50" tall or the 24 will be 41" tall.
I would like to tune it around 16-20hz with a 4" flared ports...don't know how long.

If you put the ports at the top then there's no problems with the 18" diameter sonotube.
To tune around 20 Hz you'll have two ports of 27 inches long, if you go for 16 Hz they will be around 44 inches long.

Thanks Simon5. Right on time. I went and got the 18" diameter yestherday and the wall on it is thick. I will be putting it together this weekend. Well i'll start it to night after work. I think i'll go for the 16hz.
Keep in mind that some of the sonotube junkies will suggest some extreme alignments. They sound great with much as "normal" levels, but by the time you crank on the big knob, because you've had 14 beers and all your guests really really want to dance...

Guys i need your help. This weekend i tryed to cut the plugs for this 18" sonotube. If i cut it 18" D it will not fit in the tube. It will fit on top of the tube. So i said ok i'll cut it about 17 5/8 it will go in but i'll have about 1/4in opening on 1 side. Here a pic

Well, if there's a 1/4" hole on one side (please measure it perfectly) then you need 17 5/8 + 1/4 = 17 7/8".
It needs to be quite tight, because you use glue to hold it. Better to cut 1/64" ( 😀 ) too large then sand a bit to fit.

Or you could just buy a whole bunch of garage door foam tape, use a few turns of that, and then cinch the bolts down good... Worked for me - airtight is airtight, guys, and there is a point of diminishing returns.
And don't forget our friend polyurethane glue... Slop a little in, and watch it expand and harden.

I did mine based on a 12" driver so I used an 18" sonotube,17-7/8 mdf plug. Once I cut my mdf to fit pretty snug, i used glue and some small screws to hold it in. I bought speaker cloth to create a sock to pull over the whole tube. I used bolts to create feets since mine is down firing. If you use glue you need to rough up the inside edge since it is coated with a wax type material so moisture does not effect it or the glue will not stick.
IF YOU WANT TO FIND SOME EXREMELY THICK SONOTUBES, LOOK FOR A METAL SIDING MANUFACTURER. THE METAL COMES IN ON ROLLS BEFORE IT IS FORMED, AND THE TUBES THE METAL IS ROLLED AROUND ARE VERY THICK 3/4" +\- AND ARE UP TOO 48" LONG. I WAS IN THE INDUSTRY ONCE, AND WE USED TO CUT THEM UP AND THROW THEM AWAY.
Well went ahead and pull out the jigsaw sent i'm not good with a router. The thing about it i'm good with a jigsaw. There was time when i built a 2.5 cu. ft. box for a old buddy just with a jigsaw....cause thats all he had. Right now it's looking good guys. I'll have pic when it's done.

One 8" diameter port would need to be 88 inches long to tune at 16 Hz.
You could go with a 6" port tuned to 16.5 Hz, it would be 45 inches long.
Or you can go with 7" tuned at 19 Hz, it would be 45 inches long.
Or you can go with 8" tuned at 22 Hz, it would be 45 inches long.

Or multiple four inchers - Toilet flanges are your friend - cut the hole to about 5" (measure your own toilet flange, and change the number to fit), and route the outside. Then after you glue the pvc pipe in, bondo the interior and smooth.
