Hi, I'm toying with the idea of building my own sub amp to suit Ripole speakers.
I know there's plenty of good plate amps available, but the desperate need for a new DIY project is leading me astray. This will be my first time building a sub system but the list of parts I'd need are;
power supply,
amplifier module (high level input),
volume control,
crossover, (frequency cut off),
All this comes ready installed in a plate amp, but my question is how practical is it to try doing it myself? Sourcing the amp module looks difficult because the ones I've seen come with RCA (line level) inputs.
Any recommendations?

Hi Kodabmx,
TPA3116 sounds like a possibility, if I could modify line inputs to take speaker level. Though I understand that many prefer the high level inputs as they (hopefully) result in a sub sound more in harmony with main amp.
Good suggestion, the TPA3116 is readily available, I'll look into making that idea work,
thanks.

THAT.The easiest way to make "line" inputs from speaker level is a simple voltage divider (or a pot).
A traditional voltage divider for that is a 20:1 attenuator, either 22k:1k or 10k:470 ohm, very easy to implement.
I had a look at the voltage divider idea and looks it's pretty easy to do.
As Nigel has said there's a lot of Chinese stuff out there, enough to send you to sleep browsing through it for a whole week. So I confined myself to searching Audiophonics and Soundimports, both have good listings of amp modules.
I found this 3116 amp; Order the TPA3116D2.1 amplifier module - SoundImports but seems to be a 2.1 set up.
Also this; Order the Sure Electronics AA-JA33286 Amplifier Module - SoundImports four channels with DSP.
Tempted by the second one, plenty power and might just add an external vol. control. So thanks for all your help guys.

The problem with Chinese/ebay is its a lottery.
Even many UK sellers are just passing on Chinese stuff.
I buy in a lot of wall warts.
Bought 4 from China and not one lasted a week.
Bought 4 Chinese ones from RS components and never had a problem.
The difference is RS have excellent quality control and wont accept rubbish.
