Soon I will start building my JBL loudspeakers for living room. I got all transducers but one of them- 2447 tweeter dont reach 20khz. I would like to buy someting to expand highest frequency. I found some used tweeters ind similar price and now I have two types to buy: Selenium D220ti or BMS 4540nd. Which one You propose to choose?
BMS 4540nd is the worst sounding compression driver I have had. It might have been a mismatch on the horns used but it really hurts my ears with a very nasty squeek. On the four horns/waveguides I have tried it remained thuis character. A classic driver like the B&C de250 is leaps and bounds better imho.
It is going to be 4 way. Maybe my friend will design crossover for it and do all measurments in UniversityI have the selenium and i dont like it. I much prefer Eminence ASD1001 over it. Assuming it’s a three way you are designing?
I guess the JBL runs well into 5-10kHz? What levels do you plan to play at and will it be passive. I dont know many high level super tweeters, I mostly play around with low price stuff like Eminence etc. I think the ASD1001 works quite well but I don't know how loud it goes. From 10kHz you could probably also consider things like APT50 but Im not sure how it compares and fits the JBL in terms of sensitivity.
Yes, I have the ASD1001 and it sounds great even above 10kHz. The only downside of this driver is that it cannot be crossed very low but that shouldn't be a problem in this application, since there's already the much bigger JBL2447 present for such frequencies. However, I'm not very sure about the Selenium D220Ti at high frequencies, since I've never had one. The ASD1001 is also cost-effective, costing only half as much as a D220Ti.
The ASD1001 is not as loud as the 2447, and therefore must be run separately (tri-amp). Padding the latter (the passive way) may not be a good idea, as the difference between the sensitivities is almost 6dB.

My experience with the Selenium is limited to coax use and I didnt like it xo around 2kHz. But cutting higher and with a different horn maybe it works well. Definitly have more sensitivity.
Faital HF108 / STH100 combo sounds great. Second is the 18sound NSD1095N / XT120.
Also, the Celestion CDX1-1745, CDX1-1730 or B&C DE250 (16 ohm version sounds best).
There is also the Faital FD371, Fostex FT96H and the modest little Selenium ST200 for super tweeter options.
