Hi all,
I'm Ed. I have been a member of www.diyaudioprojects.com forums for several years. It seems that either no one is posting there or they have largely blacklisted me for some reason. No matter. I'm not interested in petty squabbles but to discuss audio and circuitry.
I'm mainly an electronics guy. I like audio circuits as well as guitar circuits and I do work with RF devices here and there. I am a licensed amateur radio operator and have experience with electronics that worked at frequencies in excess of 1 GHz (not talking about cordless phones, either). I started with vacuum tubes but have started to change over to transistors because they cost less for project building.
Here are some key things about me, just for the benefit of knowledge.
-I have worked in electronics and technology for almost 10 years. I mainly work in troubleshooting and design is purely a hobby for me. I haven't build many powerful amps but have done a lot of lower-power things including a few headphone amps.
-I believe that a good amplifier sounds like an amplifier. I don't think that a good amplifier will add secret qualities to music that wasn't there before. I don't believe in thousand-dollar cables and standoffs to keep them off the floor. I don't believe in magical transistor cream or the power of NOS tubes from the 1930s. I also don't believe in arguing these points so feel free to hold your own opinions. Just don't expect to convert me because you feel threatened by my lack of faith. This doesn't mean I don't believe in quality. I just don't think you have to take out a loan to get there.
-My native territory is vacuum tubes but I am getting more comfortable with transistors. I also don't participate in the tubes-versus-transistors debate. I use both and find good results with either devices. I don't like having to buy output transformers for tube amps or high-voltage transformers. When I want to build a good transistor amp I can go to Goodwill, buy a stereo receiver for $25, and have a power transformer, some hardware and bit parts to make a new amplifier project. I can get some power transistors cheaper than a set of output tubes (much less the transformers) and stick an E88CC on the front end if I need the tube "sound". E88CCs can work at lower voltages and so can 12AU7s.
-There's nothing wrong with using silicon devices in a tube amp or vice-versa.
(steps off soap box)
So, that's about it. I have a few projects in the works and I will probably post on them once done. Thanks for taking the time to read my rambling insanity.
