Hello,
I have a desktop setup that needs some new speakers.
I think I am highly limited by speaker placement/application and looking for feedback.
Speakers are about 4” off the back wall.
Around 36” apart and 36” from my head.
Can be up to 16” tall by 12” deep by 9” wide.
Budget under $600.
Prefer DIY.
Listen to pretty much everything and genres.
Amps range from 300B set to pp EL84 to pp KT88 to 6V6.
Currently run RBH R5BiR.

You say they are 4" from the wall, I imagine you mean the back of the box. It is of more interest how close the front is.
When you get around that close, midrange reflections might be a concern. One possibility is to make a shallow enclosure and make it as close to the wall as you can, and use a simple absorber or curtain on the wall to catch the highs.

Why not use a normal amp and speakers and just plug the audio output in to the amp.
All you need then is an inexpencive cable with a 3.5 mm jack and 2 phono connectors on the other end.
I've had it like that for years now, beats any computer speakers by far.

I have the amp and speakers. Just not happy with the speakers but it’s not all the speakers fault totally.
I am not using the pc. I just got done redoing my 2.1 pc audio system. That is what brought this upgrade itch on 🙂

It's up to you whether you can make it work. The reason for my concern is that with that distance, the wall might oppose the sound as low as below 300Hz. If this happens it will be difficult to absorb it.
Do look at the KEF Egg:
KEF EGG Wireless Bluetooth Music System
They have been on close-out sale for some time now. I bought one to mate with my TV, and it sounds pretty darned good. My connection is through an optical cable, but there are other options.

I just tried these as nearfield desk speakers and they are amazing sounding. The clarity and pinpoint imaging is really superb. It was a tribute to LS3/5A but with inexpensive but nice drivers. Total cost of drivers and XO is about $160.

SB Revolution Mini Be Loudspeaker Kit - Meniscus Audio
You can start with the SB29SDAC tweeter to keep within budget. Later, upgrade to the berylliums without having to change the crossover.

Thanks for the options. Seems I have some research to do.
FYI here a snapshot of my setup.
Currently running HealthKit el84’s in push pull with a Norman k modded pas 3.
I swapped the rbh for the brio trio clone with tweeter.
I like the way they image especially with vinyl.
