Hi,
After doeing my own loudspeakers and amplifier kits, I must change my old rega planet. It's coming to an end some time soon, I can hear it, it's going funny.
Before buying a new cd player, I would like to now if there is any interesting DIY CD player KIT wich I could do my self.
I've typed those words at google, but it seems that there aren't so many as loudspeakers or amp kits.
While I get another look at the net, I thought that may be you know some interesting kit.
Any interesting suggestion is more than wellcome.
Thanks in advance to all for your help and kindness
JOHN

I think there was one in Elektor magazine a decade or two ago, using an OEM Philips mechanism. Your best bet might be to go with a CDROM drive, like in this thread: http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=17910
Hi,thanks to all.
I'm trying to understand this web site from germani hifiakademie, but I can't see this CD player anyware. It's all amps🙄

You are right, the CD player is still a prototype and not further covered there. It's all amps
juanito...
what exactly is wrong with the old Rega? If the DAC, then why not keep everything intact and look at building or buying the DAC/output boards?
The Rega is pretty ellegant mechanically, and if it means "salvaging " it from a landfill or "garbage", that's what I would do. No cheesey drawer to deal with...
Seems some of the kits are quite expensive, maybe as cheap buying a new cd player, or perhaps at least an outboard DAC (or kit).
or, get yerself a Sony Playstaion (the original "greystation", go to Mick F's Sony "greystation" page . rediculously inexpensive, service parts are still available, great sounding... spend some time/money on the cosmetics and chassis for performance....
probably under $100 total!

hi nannok,
well the problem with rega is tha little scrach sound it makes when playing. When it starts to spin it makes this electronic noise like "prr".
The other thing is that it turns off by it self and then on again. This can be repeated a few times and is very anoying, as much as the "prr"
I thought that a good option was to make my self one. Allthough I should go for a kit, I wish I could understand most of those plans and projects you all do.... when you see a site like this: http://www.audiodesignguide.com/cdplayer/index.html
is very tempting, but when you prices for a kit.... it's curious that there aren't so many cd kits as loudspeaker kits at diferent prices.
Will See what it comes, may be the guy who build my amplifier could give me a hand.
Thanks,
BYE

check the voltage
going to the cd laser. If too low or too high, then it can cause the cd player to spin and then stop, or spin slowly making a prr... sound. The original Rega cd player used a Sony transport if memory serves me correctly. If this is the case and adjustments don't work, then new transport mechanisms are available. Then upgrade your DAC or make a DAC kit..

sweems like somone posted a link for a list of transport mechanisms
and dacs..
your planet uses a KSS-213 Sony transport. Not sure if it could be upgraded, but your original one may only need to have the laser bias adjusted...(same problem with some Sony cdplayers and Sony playstations)

MANY THANKS NANNOK,
I'll check out and see what can I do. Actually, the guy who I bought it from is the official dealer in Spain for Rega products.
I'll let you know, allthogh they are very tempting those kits, a bit expensive though.
I wonder why only kits with Philips CD pro. I know it's one of the best, but there could a wider range of kits🙄
bye

HiFidiy web site is also available in English. (us.hifidiy.net)
An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.
Here's a pic of the prototype I have my eye on.

Hi
Everyone with a saw and a screwdriver can put a loudspeaker on the market. That is why there are so many, and only few of them are realy good if not exceptional.
Most linked CD player kit projects here are based on The Philips CDpro. This is a nice CD drive, but it has a lousy clock on board, not to mention the sonical properties of the integrated DAC.
If you look for high digital playback quality, you have to design new clock, DAC and the analogue backend.
To do this yourself requires an electronics study, it is not something you "just" learn from the internet.
I wish you succes in chosing and building your project
best

hi Guido,
This interesting thread speak about different players at various prices (and various qualities).
Many thanks to remember that Tent Lab's CD player is (perhaps) the only one who have a single and silent (low jitter) clock.
