Looking for an Open Baffle Dipole project

Hey Eric. Yeah, not looking too bad. That could work with some slight design changes... Thanks. I'll search some more info on that project and see if it's something for me.

Do you have an idea of the cost for speakers and crossover?

The cost of the drivers is about $500 per speaker, another $200-300 for the XO, and figure another $100 or so for wood, screws, glue, paint, etc. Total somewhere $800-$1000 each, depending on choice of XO components and wood finishing. These were designed for high power handling with very clean output and they deliver quite well!

Jonas- I like the look of your speakers, too - especially the small footprint!

Have a look at this project.
The Manzanita OB
Very easy to build, not expensive. And let me give you a sneak preview of what's to come.

For the mid/tweeter use the Vifa TC9FD18-08 3" fullrange. Stay with the same Peerless 12". Crossover is dead simple, only 3 parts. 20mH on the woofer, 11uF+6R in series on the Vifa 3". Voila! You can vary the resistor by a few ohms to blend best with your room.

For not much money you'll have a great sounding speaker. Make it as pretty or ugly as you like.

Hi Pano,
I use similar speakers for background music in basement while working on projects. It has 10F3 4" fullrange, 16 ohm version and some 12" woofer/midrange, 16 ohm as well, on open baffle. Crossover is one cap. I do not know the brand of 12" woofer, it came from Fisher console, it has paint over the label. This open baffle does not put much bass, but boy does it sing with small tube amps...
edit...mine is completely ugly

Hello Gumleguf,
Check out the site of Troels Gravesen. He has an interesting OB-project as wel as a semi dipole. I Have no experience with building his OB projects (Whish I had the time and space!!) but his 2,5 way transmission line project (unfortunately discontinued, due to Raidho who doen't want to supply DIY people with there planar tweeter anymore) I build is a speaker that will serve my high standard needs for a long time. Besides mr. Gravesen is very helpful.

It's all about trade-offs. If you want bass, which the Manzanita has lots of, you have to give up efficiency. Or you need a very large baffle and driver surface. The Manzi is big and full sounding, but needs power. 50WPC at least. It's near 82dB/W.

I've built some efficient OB rigs, but they had no bass. There is no free lunch. 🙁

My giant OB sub has a delicious peak around 20 Hz and carries on playing south of where the Klipschorn ends (the 18-37 Hz range). But it is big (if well concealed). I've done it but I am not sure I advocate it for others. (My main motivation was to introduce a totally different kind of sub to complement room resonances of the corner Klipschorn. Which worked very nicely.)

I'm pretty skeptical about the sense of pumping endless Linkwitz OB-correction power into subs. The math doesn't look favourable and the suspensions don't have the capacity.

Have checked the KJAO G 09 thread on audiocircle out quite a few times - MJAO G 098 - The Anagram - Crossover revision. It looks like it's pretty much what I'm trying to build. And at a low prize too!

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

Trouble is though that I can't figure out if the project was in fact completed or abandonded. It's been more than a year since there was last any activity in the thread. I tried sending Erling a message, but so far no response.
