Hello.....
I am new to SET amplifiers but I need to try one and I just missed out on a pair of used Wall Audio M33 mono blocks.
I was wondering if you guys could recommend other types? I am looking to spend max 4000-4500 $, I am OK with buying a used amplifier. I have been looking at some 845 types.... the reason is That I respect around 20 W and a design without feed back.
Any recommendations will bee highly appreciate.

Hi Frank,
I can wholeheartedly reccomend NAT amplifiers, i have the SE2se monoblocks and for me i have reached the end-station, upgrading is something part of the hobby for me and in all aspects i keep on moving up the so called ladder regarding DIY and commercial equipment but for me the NAT's are totaly upgrade proof.
I LOVE them.
Be sure, when you buy a NAT, to buy a recent model, in other words not a model with the 211 tubes as these are stupid expensive in NOS quality.
Just look for the recent SE1se, SE2se, Microwave (very good as well!).
I think the NAT SET amps have a very good price/quality ratio.
In any case good luck looking for a nice SET, i know for myself after SET no more pushpull etc for me!!
Happy listening!

Antique Sound Lab model AQ 1006-845 is quite popular years ago and now new model is sold here: ANTIQUE SOUNDLAB
A 1st project built around 845s, with their 1200 V. B+ rail, is a prescription for serious injury or even death. 😡
What sort of speakers are you thinking about using?

Hello again,
Thanks for the suggestions..... I rely like the NAT Audio amp. It has a very wide frequency range.
I have designed my own full range units, and need to try them on some different types of amps. I am now using some Advance Acoustics M1000 mono blocks but they are way overkill for my units, the sensitivity is around 95 dB@2,83V.
I am using a 11Kg field coil magnet for my unit and it is the best sound I ever had, right now I am looking to make a cheaper version. I think a SET amp. Will be a perfect partner for thesis units..... so I need to try it.
I have uploaded some pictures and data for the unit, just a little teaser😀.

Frank,
If you apply Paul Joppa's 102 dB. rule to 95 dB. sensitive speakers, you will observe that 8 WPC is sufficient. 8 WPC is easy to get from SE 300Bs, which are a LOT less dangerous than 845s.
How you put the circuitry together depends on how much euphony you like. As the late Harvey Rosenberg said, the 300B puts on a show. Quite a bit of 2nd order HD is produced. The lower powered 2A3 is more linear. You can deal with the linearity issue, should you so chose, by using a partially or totally unbypassed cathode bias resistance.

I found that there is not a lot off thesis NAT for sale, the only one I found is a NAT S3se MKII the price is 5900 Euro, a bit over my budget.
Simsalabim, that is one nice NAT you got there, man I wish it was me😀
Eli Duttman, I am not looking for a build....well at leat at this time.
Take care

I have seen that one as well at the time, it has been on sale for quite some time.I found that there is not a lot off thesis NAT for sale, the only one I found is a NAT S3se MKII the price is 5900 Euro, a bit over my budget.

I have contacted NAT about if i should buy, in all honoustly Nikic told me the amp was allready 8 years old more or less and it is a very complex design (with it's 4 x 211 tubes per monoblock), and if anything is to happen this amp would be possibly very expensive to repair, also note that NAT stopped having the SE3se in their range.
Also those 211 NOS tubes are among the most expensive tubes available and very rare, stay clear is my advise.
Do you live in the EU?
If so, it would be wise to contact Nikic directly, i know i did and i have bought the demo pair SE2se for a very nice price, over your budget but a SE1se or even better a Microwave is in your budget.
Nikic had also a pair of demo NAT Microwaves, inspite of the name these amps are incredible SET amps!!
They are called Microwaves because the NOS tubes being used (GI-7B) originally where being used in the 60s for microwave purposes.
The Microwave has a closed cabinets as the ceramic tubes miss the glow in the dark feature[emoji1]
Also these tubes are not at all expensive! So that is also a big plus, the SE2se has a bit more transparancy but the Microwaves are very close!
Also good GM70 tubes are more expensive.
But maybe you have the opportunity to listen somewhere first, might give you an impression.
Happy searching!
Give it a shot😉
Frank,
Also i must say i concur with Eli,
Such high sensitivity speakers do not require the heaviest of amps, you may want to have a look also for a bit more modest SET as Eli pointed out.
I like to build all kind of speakers and the SE2se have different modes to choose from, that is why i choose the SE2se.
Modes are:
El. Static 8 Ohm, normal 8 Ohm, normal 4 Ohm, el. Static 4 Ohm.

I got a pair of Hyperion HT845 Mono blocks (25WPC SET) couple years ago, as the company is OOB os they are dirty cheap, only around $1000 a pair compares to the original retail $4500. IMO they are well built 845 monos. i upgraded all stock tubes to higher models especially the 845 to WE replica from Shuguang China(cost almost same as the amp) and the 6V6 to NOS GEC 6V6G ST bottles from Ebay Germany, WOW. It drives my 3 way DIYed 12" tower (90dB) to fly. Compares to my another PP KT88 (ARC D-115, 100W PP KT88), the 845 is airy, detail and open espicailly for vocals. Only shortage is the punch of low end when playing big band music at high volume. All tube amps are a little bit too "fat" on the low end. KT88 is better on that but still not comparable to SS as everybody knows.
I am using DCX 2496 to crossover at 350Hz and use 845 to drive M+H and use KT-88 to drive bass. Planning to get some KT120 to replace the KT88s.

Nhe261, that is one nice set-up you have
I contacted Hyperion but it is out of stock and they did not know then it will be available again.
I found this NAT Integrated NAT Single | MyAudioShop Dose any one know how it preforms?

This is a great amp indeed for those looking for an integrated.
However personally i would prefer seperates.
How about contacting NAT?
I think a SE1se or a Microwave (both SET monoblocks) would be nice indeed!

Yeah,Hyperion is out of business, too bad. Their HT845 and HT88 are all well made SED amps. Also they have some very honored speakers .
They are in CAN that's why we still can find some bargains locally.

Hi frank, what kind of cabinets will you be using your speakers in? They look tasty, precious! cheers, dak808
Hi DAK808,
I have tried some different type, sealed, open baffle...right now they are in a vented box around 30 L. I have no measurements for the vented box but I would estimate it's good for around 45Hz. The OB was fantastic but I did never could match it properly with a sub.
The plan was to make some ML, but you know how it is......to many projects😀.

Dose anyone know this amp. Orpheus SET - 211 / 845 I found a Danich dealer...
Looks very similar to my Hyperion design from outside. Mine is using 845, 6SL7 and 6V6. The stock tube are all from Shuguang China the same company. So I am thinking the schematic maybe same. How much is it in USD?
