Hi,
Looking for a non-illuminated black anodized vandal on/off switch (22mm or so) for 230V. I only seem to be able to find them illuminated and as momentary when in black.
Suggestions are highly appreciated. 🙂
Cheers,
Greg

Same question. Is that a latching switch?
I'm always confused with terms like vandal, anti-vandal, vandal resistant...
Vandal refers to the construction of the switch. They're for harsh environments or public places like kiosks etc. These switches are usually water-resistant, sealed, with high contact life etc.
Latching/Momentary refers to the switching function.
A momentary switch only "works" (i.e. closes NO contacts, opens NC contacts) only while pressed. If you lift your finger it reverts to its original state.
(Think of a car's horn. You have to keep pressure on it to make a sound.)
A latching switch needs to be pressed to change states.
Think of a lights switch. We press it once and the lights will stay on until we press it again - then the lights will go off. If it was momentary you'd have to keep pressing on the switch to have light.
ITW has a nice range of switches but datasheets say most of them are momentary.
The "on/off" in the description of this specific switch is confusing because it insinuates a latching switch while the datasheet mentions "momentary range". If it is indeed monentary the description should say "(on)/off" or "on/(off)".

I think from the spec pdf on Farnell (CPC is part of farnell) this is a momentary switch - the description on CPC is ambiguous PDF for Switch
Searching farnell for "Vandal Switch" give 230 Vandal resistant switches and only 1 black one 🙁
this appears to be an on/off switch Farnell 7674228 ? but its not black...

Yep, yuo are right again. It is a momentary switch and not a latching.
I think I'm giving this up. No nice looking black vandal switch on my amp after all. Oh well... Thanks for your time all. 🙂

Would this work for you?

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

Hi Richard,
Thanks for your suggestion, but had my eyes set on an aluminum one. My chassis will be a 2U Slim Line model from modushop.biz with a 10mm front, and I don't think a plastic button will look too good in my opinion.
Thanks again. 🙂

The only source I know of.
They appear to be a big OEM and they can make any kind of switch (vandal or otherwise) just as long as it's in significant quantities.
Having received a sample from them (they charge a lot for shipping, mind you), I wouldn't be surprised if this is the place where Bulgin etc have their switches made.
Sadly, they'd bother dealing with DIY'ers only in the case of a Group Buy.

I thought it was clear as day - MOMENTARY.
Are you after the switch for appearance or in an anti vandal environment ?

Appearances, definetely. Would use it on a black anodized 10mm alumin front, so I want something that looks goods and is good quality. There are many nice ring illuminated momentary ones but (obviously) none of them are for 250V.
So I was searcing for a regular black anodized vandal 250V on/off switch instead, but I guess they are not so easy to find. I haven't been able to find one.

In the PDF on Farnell is the real description, the CPC description (and the farnell one - its the same) - is ambiguous, the only clue is Off-On
This looks like becoming a diy job, a latching mains switch like this Switch and using the housing/button of a vandal switch to provide the mechanical part. 😉 At least that is way I would go for a one off if an actual part is not available.

In Post ~15 I have copied the exact PDF file that was originally posted.
It clearly states MOMENTARY.
Looking at RS
Buy Anti Vandal switch online from RS Components
It would appear, by the nature of being Vandal Proof, these switches are momentary.
Why not just build a little SET/RESET circuit so that you can use the swicth of choice (ie momentary) and turn it into ON/OFF.

my original post to CPC (#3) was the problem - that is the ambiguous description, later I found the PDF on farnell which cleared it up. Would be nice CPC actually described the switch as latching or momentary.
However Farnell do have a few latching Vandal switches but no black ones 🙁 the OP is I feel going to have to make one or use something else.
I like the set reset idea, A real switch on the back and it would all look great
