Here adire audio claims to have the 12" with the longest one way excursion, an astonishing 27 mm on the sadhara 12
but then, they seems to forget the 12W7 from JL audio beats the Sadhara by 2 mm's
http://www.jlaudio.com/subwoofers/pdfs/12W7_MAN.pdf
I modeled a box in winisd using it, and with a 4cuft box, tuned to 22 hz, its f3 is at 20hz, and max spl is about 115dB at 1 meter... seems to be a fine driver for a sub 😉

is the extra 2mm more actualy useful??
neither has THD figures - the one with lower excursion could infact sound cleaner at its max than the higher one.
you wont know unless its specified
DUMAX xmax is when the BL factor reduces by 10% i think-nohting to do with THD
but regarding THD-if u want SPL i think a woofer with HIGH THD and high harmonic content added will do better for SPL comps etc..quite the opposite if jBL pro series gear.
i imagine at low frequencies and high excursions THD will become especialy important
dont forget how much power you will need to use every millimetre of excursion, which i wouldnt normally try to do-use at its max always that is
cheers

Real X-max?????
You have to be very carefull about how much faith you put in the adverts of companies. If there are published voicecoil lengths and air gap heights ( the thickness of the top plate ) then you can calculate X-max by subtracting the top plate from the voicecoil height and then dividing it in two. This will give you the true X-max. An addition of about 25% is about the maximum that sounds acceptably clean to educated ( having heard clean bass live from say a pipe organ or string bass and remembering it) ears. I for one do not believe the figures on the audire site.

What do you think of 38mm?? Resonant Engineering XXX.
Possibilities: 2x2 Ohm, 2x1 Ohm, 4x2 Ohm (!). 1600W RMS. (Uses XBL2 technology, yes, by Adire)
But you can better wait a few weeks. JL Audio will release the W8 (SPL) (to fight DigitalDesigns, Adire and RE), and the W9 (SQ).
The W8 will go WAAAAAY louder than the DD's and RE.
(one RE 15 inch hits about 150dB in a car using 6kW)

Yhea you guys are right, usualy advertised specs are a bit optimistic. And as mike sais, THD figures could we worse on the JL side.
But I heard many JL products and I must say they sound really good.
damn!
Can't wait till this one... We sell JL audio products at my job, can't wait to receive the new series (I hope we do), to test em out 😉
