Long VGA Cable for 1280 x 1024

Hello!
I read a previous post on long VGA cables. The conclusion on that post was that most commercially available long VGA cables worked fine. The user who got one was satisfied.
I have not been so lucky, however. I just bought a 15 ft cable and the image has gotten kind of blurry. I believe the main difference between the previous post is that my screen is a 17" LCD working on 1280 x 1024 resolution.
I'm using standard 15 pin VGA cable.
Can someone give me some advice on how to fix this situation?
Best regards,
Albert C

Hi,

Unfortunately there is no work around; the problem is with the cable itself. You need to get a good cable. Mind you, it doesn’t need to be expensive to be good. I got a proper, 30ft one, for 15$ or so. I run it with 1600x1200 res and it still keeps the image clear, without a trace of ghosting.
Previously I had a poor, 15ft cable and the image was... oh dear. You can see the ghosting extending 4 pixels to the right.

So, a good cable is thick, about the size of your pinky and has ferrites cores on each ends. It needs to be that thick coz its tripe shielded. There is one shield for each video component (red, green and blue), one for vertical and horizontal sync and a final one for the holl lot.
The ferrites are filtering electrical noise from other appliances or nearby AC wires.

I'm not going into commercial naming coz there is much confusion there. Generally these cables are named SVGA or XGA. When you think about it those are 800x600 and 1024x768 res, but don't worry about it, they will work with 1240 or above res. As I was saying, thick and with lumps 🙂.

Good luck!

gmphadte, there is only one difference between an monitor cable and an extender: the former has female and male plugs as the first has only male ones.
