Those are good, but a little bulky for my taste, and a PITA to carry around.
What I use, when needed, is small grey-black mats of Indoor-outdoor carpet. I usually cut them in half, lengthwise, so around 2' x 8'.
Thick enough to protect the wire, super-thin so less of a trip hazard, heavy enough to (mostly) stay in place, and you just roll them up when done.
If used in a very high-traffic area, then I'll gaffers tape the edges, but usually that isn't even needed.

The connector I linked to though has yet to my knowledge showed up on any commercially produced equipment.
