especially since the LM3886TF is north of $7 at retail here.

I'm looking at it, now that the LM3886TFs are becoming unobtainium.

A friend of mine got me 4 x 3886TF in Bangalore for Rs. 1450 ($30) incl. VAT.

In short, the 3875/76 can give better results with relatively poor layouts and components (including point-to-point wired gainclones), but the 3886 is more rugged with better dynamics.

I intend to test this using the same schematic (ESP Project 19) in a few weeks. using running of a 300VA 18-0-18 transformer (24V DC). Just waiting for the 3886 to arrive in Mumbai.

I built both LM3875 and LM3886 to compare, couldn't tell the difference.

It seems that the 1875 and 3886 are sorta for different applications. The 3886 with it's 7A current capacity is better for small subwoofers (if used singly) and can handle low impedance loads a bit better. Sonically the 1875 is nicer for fullrange, widerange (100Hz to 20kHz) applications where some of the grunt work is being done by a subwoofer amp.

Ouch - that's ~Rs.360 each, about the same as EBay pricing. It was about Rs.165 each at S.P.Road about 60 days ago, and started steadily climbing from there. I stopped buying when it crossed Rs.250 locally, which was probably a mistake - there was adequate quantity available to build a a few months stockpile at that price.
