Lm1036 Tone Control

I am currently in the process of planning my first proper DIY amplifier. I have built a coiuple of single channel prototypes a couple of years back when i was a teenager never had the money to build something proper until now. I am using the lm3886t as my power amp drive. I will require some form of tone/volume control(balance is optional). It must be easy to build on strip board (dont really have pcb ability yet) and needs to reasonably good quality. I have been looking at the LM1036 chip for quite sometime. It offers a simple and complete solution for my needs... I think. First of all has any one tried this setup or any other setup using LM1036. My biggest concern is the signal to noise ratio is80db on 1036 compared to 92db on the 3886. What is the significance of this? I would also be intersted if there are any alternatives.

Hi,

I have used the LM1036, but I was not too happy with the result (OK, I had some grounding problems too). I even have used the predecessors TCA730 and TCA740 (now THAT's a long time ago!).
If you combine a 80dB s/n preamp and a 96dB s/n power amp, you indeed end up with something very close to 80dB s/n :-(
What I would do now (and what I will do for my next project) is skip the tone controls and just use a decent volume pot in front of the power amplifier (the LM3886 in your case, lots of info on this nowadays: gainclones everywhere!)

Regards, Dirk

I agree with you that remoiving tone controls would simplify the design but I require them. Do you know of any other similar chip that is a all in one package with good quality sound that will work with the 3886.
Any particular reason you want all in one package? This can actually end up being more difficult. A lot of the all-in-one chips are surface mount, for instance, which would be a problem for me. Also, I would bet that many of them are digitally controlled.
I like the ESP idea. If you get the circuit board it makes for a very simple effort.

The initall attraction was the chip and the layout was well suited for strip board construction also the control pots didnt have to be ganged. Also I have been told that putting carbon resistors in signal path introduces noise and the dc controlled volume seemed a good way to avoid that. The ESP idea seems like a good plan.

What would be the best opamp to drop in instead of the tl amps. Also is using carbon pots a huge issue, can the noise introduced be ignored or is it wroth going for wirewound pots. (I cant seem to find wirewound ganged pots to save my life). Thankyou for your advice I will post pics once the amp comes to life.

Dual DC Operated Tone/Volume/Balance Circuit

Hi there, I share this proyect fixed, fixed because i found in a web page and those work, after this take a look the datashhet and see some errors, well, this is the history enjoy it!

And I forget tell......... THAT'S REALLY WORKS VERY GOOD!!!! the loudness got a great effect in the speakers to much better than TL072 or 4558, to much deep in treble and bass, in fact, don't know why they call "Tone Control"

I so much visit to the PCB but not the componentes.txt remember, is important see it because some components are changed and in componentes.txt, contain it that information; obvious, if you want build this proyect 😀
