Living in a camper, cheap DIY audio, Fostex 206E as ceiling speaker?

Ok, here's my home. Not sure if these pictures help at all. So it would be easy to put them in the ceiling. But of course that's not ideal. What about converting one of these ceiling cabinets to a speaker enclosure? Is that a stupid idea. Or the floor ones, but then they will be pointed at the floor....

Just build a pair of uFonken. Plans are here: Frugal-phile | Box Library / Fostex

Build a cardboard mock-up and use it to figure out where they can go (i can see quite a few -- you'll need to rig roof or wall mounts for them). Then after you build them, you can play with all the places you could put them and see which works best for you.

Alright, last update:
I bought some Vifas. They are so cheap I figured I might as well install them in the ceiling, if nothing else it's a vast improvement on what's here now.

But, I'm interested in building some stand alone speakers as well. And, now that I have a basic system going (as soon as it arrives) I can also take a bit of time and put a little more money into it if needed.

That being the case, for a small space like my van, is the Fostex 85WK with uFonkens my best bet? Looks like a manageable enclosure for my limited knowledge so I'd be game for it.

Got the Vifas today. Will probably install this evening. What do you guys think would be best, in ceiling or in one of these cupboards?

And If I mount them in ceiling, how far away from the cupboard should they be?
If I put them in the cabinet do you think it's still ok to have stuff inside the cabinet? I could just make the cabinet a speaker enclosure and keep my clothes somewhere else.

Or maybe in the wall here (if there's enough room in the wall) on the flat part facing back into the camper on both sides of the entrance.

OK, got them installed in the ceiling. Obviously not ideal, but I must say, I'm already quite impressed with these tiny guys. Plenty of sound. Some weird issues with eqing because of the set up, and sometimes the bass literally sounds like someone knocking on the ceiling... I could imagine with a good enclosure these would really be great.

Anyway, already quite happy. Big big improvement on how I was listening to music up until now. Thanks very much for the tip. Can't imagine better for 38 euros...!!

FWIW,

Pioneer TS-MR1640 6-1/2" Marine Coaxial Speaker Pair

I use these in my small sailboat with 2050 amp...heresy around here, I know, but sound is better than it should be...no box required.

Great, that looks affordable!

I would go for the most basic DIY set up. Not a lot of room here so I would probably just install it in one of the floor cabinet areas. Of course this won't be an ideal enclosure with precise volume etc, so that's probably also a big factor in which driver I should get.

I saw somewhere a recommendation for these, which are certainly in my price range, even with shipping. SPEAKERS 12" MCM NUMBER 55-1655 MADE IN TAIWAN ONE PAIR FOR SALE | eBay

Prighello: I have no idea how to do it! Is that what I'd need, a plate amp? Can you recommend a good cheap one that would fit my set up (Topping 2050)?

fatbettery: only concern is I assume car gear is designed to work well with the extra noise of a running engine. MY van doesn't run, it's just my home, so maybe it needs a slightly different set-up? But, in general, I am more than happy to look at car subs. In fact, I think most of the ones I've been checking out are just that.

So would something like this work?
Dayton Audio SA25 25W Subwoofer Plate Amplifier

I have no problem running the wires...

Yeah, something like that would work with the right sub. 25w though is lite for most subs. You'd need something really sensitive or small. Two ways to do this.

1. Use the speaker level inputs on the plate amp and it's cross over to tune the sub/speakers. This the ideal way.

2. Use a signal splitter to run the signal to both the topping and the plate amp. The speakers run in full range with sub. This is less wiring.

Either way I'd do a cost/benefit to just buying a powered sub because sometimes it's not cost effective to build one. Best of luck and keep the questions coming if you don't totally "get it" right away.

Also, fattbattery might be on to something with a car audio sub/amp. They can run off the battery.
